When that happens, be warned that Sam Worthington cannot keep a consistent accent no matter how hard he tries. In spite of that, solid acting and sheer visual spectacle lead me to a solid 8.

I don't mind hearing few words in the Australian accent (he's Australian, right?) :) At least I will practice accent recognition :)

The actual story and the plot is very important for me, and in Avatar it was boringly cliche. In the off-topic thread someone linked to a blog talking about an earlier script for Avatar. That movie would have gotten a 10 from me I believe.

The graphics were very good however.

So a 5 from me.

Hey, it's not my fault I live in a thoroughly ignorant and self-obsessed country! ;)
Dubbing is the devil himself! Subtitles FTW! Even though I watched it in Japan, so Japanese subtitles when the Na'vi talked was almost impossible to follow... :p

I don't know if this is restricted to my theatre (the biggest one in Scandinavia BTW IIRC), but the audio wasn't as good as it could've been. For example when those helicopters flew I didn't hear it going from left-right like it could've been done.

What are your experiences? (If you remember)
Size of the theatre doesn't matter for the audio, but usually there are some theatres designed with superb sound systems. In fact, the biggest theatres usually doesn't have that nice sound systems in my experience.

In my hometown the biggest theatre isn't that nice actually, it's basically the oldest and originally built too many decades ago. They've made it better, but it still gives the impression of going to the 'moving pictures', when the idea of film must have been quite novel.
In contrast they have a smaller and completely up-to-date theatre with amazing sound and great layout of the room. It usually always shows the most explosive, fast-paced action movies that Hollywood can manage to churn out. :)

Actually, his accent is pretty consistently American, but he can't really decide where in America. Then again, I kind of doubt that it would bug you too much, since you don't encounter many different Americans, I doubt it would be too noticeable.

What did you guys think about the acting overall?

I know it's hard when so many characters are animated  but still!

The acting wasn't that great, although it wasn't terrible. Just average. Could've been better, could've been worse.

I didn't notice any accent problem. Probably for the same reason Sam Worthington apparently couldn't get a consistent one.

As for the audio, well, sometimes it's best if you don't even have to think about it. If it seems like it's just there, without taking your attention where it shouldn't, then it's good. As soon as you start to notice the audio as separate from the visual (e.g. if you are thinking that the sounds don't quite sound like you would expect them to), then you're losing quality. I didn't notice the audio at all, as separate from the movie. I never once even considered its presence as an individual element. So I'd say that any audio problems would probably have to be put down to the cinema in which you saw it.

I gave it a four. It had some pretty pictures, but was completely predictable. And you can only go so far with lampshading: Unobtanium???

Hire a writer.

went in pretty much decided upon hating it, actually kinda liked it and enjoyed the screening. less cringeworthy elements than you'd suspect after hearing about unobtanium. not very original but fun and that is what movies should be first and foremost imho.

might even watch it a second time if I got nothing else to do.

I have no problem with "unobtainium." It's actually a fairly standard sci-fi name for a difficult to obtain mineral/element/mulligan. I've read many books where "unobtainium" is the name of their stardrive fuel.

Regarding Sam Worthington's accent, I did notice a few changes here and there, but I've heard much worse. It's next to impossible for an Australian, Mel Gibson excluded, to not lose their accent control during scenes involving yelling. When his voice spikes, you definitely hear the Australian coming out of him.

the problem is that they didn't tie it in with the Aliens movie.

it would've been awesome if xenomorphs had infested pandora and were fighting it's ecosystem. in the midst of the fight a human survey team could land on the planet and have to fight for their survival...

I've been exposed to too many 3D media (including Machenima) to give a proper rating. So I'd give it an 8. Though Avatar is obviously light years ahead of any machenima related material (at the time of this post)

This is possibly the greatest idea I've ever seen on the interwebs.

My thoughts exactly. I was on the graphics that I liked about the movie, everything else sucked. Which is why i gave it a four also.

I thought it had some kind of usage in the industrial sense, and not some pretty mineral...

I think it's supposed to enable FTL travel. Never explained though, which annoyed me.

I think we've been comparing it to the wrong movies. It's not first and foremost a clone of Pocahontas or Dances with wolves. It's Dune!
