Avatar Blues

I was searching for an avatar that suited my needs and I couldn't really decide on any, or find any that I liked. So I ended up creating the toilet avatar. (My current one). Then I noticed that everyone was putting an American flag as a backdrop for their regular avatars in an attempt to seem patriotic or show their pride for their nation. I found this rather rediculous (the patriotic aspect of it at least) and I decided to do the same to mock them. I put an American Flag backdrop behind my toilet. (Which might I point out has the lid down and is clean ;) ) I had it for a few weeks, and then...

A poster recently decided to post a thread doing some unecessary France bashing, and I retaliated finding that inapprorpiate. Then they called me anti-american because of my avatar. Promptly after I was asked to remove my avatar due to the "avatroll" rules. It never really occurred to me that people would see the avatar as me crapping on the flag :p My bad.

Anyhow, I don't really have too much of a point other than: People can take certain messages the wrong way and we may not even realize it.

I like cgannon64's constantly evolving, very topical quotes, and he's only changed his Avatar once -- very subtley -- that I can remember.

Well I remember Gannon going through a string of much better avatars than his current cigarette smoking anime.

I think that two kinds of shifts are easily assimilated:

1) short term shifts away to a different icon for some purpose (remember Old School Avatar Day last fall?)- this was what I'd intended on April Fools day.

2) "seasonal" shifts, like what Sween does, where he sticks with an avatar for two months at a time then switches up.

EDIT: And Jeratain, I loved the Toilet flag.

hey I had an april fools avatr too antonius, I just didnt post all day april 1st!

and I would gladly use my other avatar, unfortunately it is 15X15 pixels too big.

Shrink it.

 I've always considered changing my avatar to my current taste in pop culture. But if I did, I probably would have gone through 15 internet cartoons, about 20 TV shows, and a couple of other characters in about a week. ;) I'll stick to Spike - Cowboy Bebop is the only pop culture thingy that lasts for me...;) :D

Anyway, I second the notion about the name change. I still have to correct myself from calling you Sultan...;)

Well, a few days ago I had a bit of an argument with the diplomat, and we parted, now I use Dude, or Uday, which Sultan so innovatively pointed out was the pig latin name of his "real" name. ;)

Toasty --

The only time it bothers me is when I think your previous Avatar was better. And w/ a consistant Avatar I can tell it's your post w/out reading your name. Which can be good or bad -- I might approach one of your posts w/ preconceptions you don't want me to have if I instantly see that it's yours.

Antonius --

I first started paying attn to the Off-Topic Forum when cgannon64 had his thumbs-up/"hand"-gun anime-guy. It's similar to the current (as of 25-Apr-03 10:45PM ET) cigarette anime-guy -- similar enough that while I noticed the difference, I instantly realized it was his.

I like most of those I see, but I like an Avatar to resemble a face - evolving, not completely changing.

But it's such an ordeal for me to change mine, I'll probably stick with it forever, despite the ******** lettering job I did on it...

Of course, if you are talking about the female avatar I admired, where's the trouble in that?

And Ohwell, I love the Ude-day avatar; I especially like when you and Napolean (Sahaf) are on a thread together, I feel like I'm playing cards along the banks of the Tigris.

Gannon- I always liked the "happy go lucky period" best.

Mojo- I assume I've seen that avatar of yours in American flag form somewhere else? I like the flag version...

Toasty- you'll always be Trotsky to me.

Folks, reassure me that you'll come to love this donkey avatar; or tell me its okay to be Gay Hitler, as I've always dreamed of....

Was it for me? I have to be the cheese?

It's just too cheesy, Perfection.

AB or SB: Just stick to a more friendly avatar. You don't want to make enemies. Do you?

Toasty: don't change for a least a year. You owe us that much. :p

I think the one I kept for the longest was the "Red Commie Evil Bastard (c)," (hammer & sickle) followed by the "Starving Artist" (Yamaha piano).

I think that I spend too much time surfing the net and there are too many pretty pictures in the world for me to ever be content :mischief:...

You know, the poster's name appears in each post. I don't know why everyone is up in arms about changing avatars.

Though, for me, you can usually count on a doughnut or Homer Simpson (or both ;)) in my avatar.

Wow, that nude Homer is the most offensive avatar I've ever seen!!!

@Perfection- I would love to use the cheese avatar, but sadly I am restricted to using a Civ themed avatar from the standard set...

I rather liked the Gay Hitler. It was both clever and funny.

I threw my avatar up in about three seconds, as I was desperate for a custom avatar, but undecided. Then it grew on me.

I don't see the fuss in the avatar. . .Perhaps I'm not offended by other peoples avatars because of Turner's Rule #3 - Opinions Vary. I may not like what a person says, but I also tend to ignore that which I don't like. Immature, a bit, yes, but it works for me.

AB - I'd like to say knock yourself out. . .but one must do what one must do, eh?

Personally, AB, I would have taken the ban so that I could keep my avatar/title/sig rights.

I hate being banned, and I play in too many SGs/PBEMs to be banned. I'm all about working with the moderators, as I still hope my turn as a mod will come...
