SLOWING DOWN THE AI CIV TECH RATE (Deity)

General Discussion proceedure:

After all postings I will rewrite everyones posts into
one thread and place it into the Strategy & Tips Section.

Examining GOTM 7 Results:

I noticed there were a few 1300's AI spaceship victories.
Unbelievable ! I must say Ive never experienced anything even like that ?

HERE ARE MY ASSUMPTIONS ON REDUCING AI TECH RATE

BUYING TECHS

Buying techs from the AI increases the AI tech rate.
However on deity level its the best option. But in saying that
we do have choices on the AI we trade with.

Choices:

I very rarely trade with a Civ whose attributes in the editor
has science as a major criteria. Giving money to that civ
can only result in a much faster overall AI rate, and I
rather pay more gold to a different AI civ

I trade more heavily with the weakest AI, the gold you
give them won't be used so much towards new research.
This assumption if Im correct is based on the AI/AI trade rate.

For example

Say you are 3 techs behind the next slowest tech civ,
and that civ is 3 techs behind the leader (all techs say 1000gp)

If you buy direct the result is 3,000gp to the leading tech civ :(

If you buy from the other civ, 3000 gold goes to that civ and
you have caught up 3 techs. Lat say that civ spends its
new wealth on tech. It will buy the next 3 at 625 each
1000/160 as per editor

So now the advance civ has 1,875 of your gold, but thats
alot better than 3,000 (worse case). The weaker civ may
have used the cash for units or buildings

This is my understanding of AI/AI trade rate, as its been
working well for me, or maybe Ive just been lucky :)

TIMING

Ofcourse the longer you wait the cheaper they are, so buying
techs when every other civs have it, will fuel the fire less.

WAR STRATEGIES

2. War does wonders to slow down AI Tech rate.
I use Military Alliances when I can, if a civ is getting to far
ahead in tech and the price is not too high. Ofcourse MPP's
are also an option.

These tactics have worked well for me, so post your comments
and strategies.

Many Thanks

That's the Deity Dogma that everybody repeats but I don't think that's the only option. On deity, with an expansioninst civ on a huge map I think it's possible to take an early tech lead, and keep it if you are careful. I still have to take cities from the AI via war to compete, of course.

Really !

How about on a small/standard map ? Im getting sick of that
stupid adviser who knows the price but doesn't tell you the
exact price. It is really irratating :(

The main advantage of expansionist civs is goody huts (there are others like maps but on deity the AI is exploring too). Expansionists get about 25% tech results (only about 6% for non-expansionist) from deity goody huts (and of course no barbs from huts, which can kick your *ss on deity if you are exploring with a single unit). If you play on a smaller map my experience is that you run out of goody huts too soon. That doesn't mean that you can't win, but it presents more of a challenge. Of course, when you run out of goody huts you have to switch strategies. If you have enough cities (from war), libraries, and commerce by that time you might be able to compete in research. Otherwise you might have switch back to a tech buying strategy.

I frankly don't like to be behind in research. I guess I would rather risk losing than play a coward's game to win.

It is not difficult to catch up in tech with minimal cash outlay. Proper trading can net you techs without paying much. I will try to post how to do that when I have some time available. The key is knowing the value of each tech to each civ (Yes, the value always changes according to circumstances).

But that doesn't stop the weakest AI civ from giving their money or trading with the scientific civ? Therefore, I think the golds you give to the weakest civ will eventually end up in the strongest civ within the next turn or so.
