IBT some "native" american calling himself "leader" of the so called Iroquis barges in on me and my very agile korean concubine. he dares to demand our Ivory. i have him ceremoniously escorted to the courtyard, were he is shot. remarkably, the real leader of this rabble thought it was a nice joke. and doesnt want to take it any further. i shall have my honour exponged by his blood!.

decide on a strategic path. slow military builds and rush some culture.

1- WDC 'dral > lib, Novgrod worker > worker,
germans get Copernicus in STUTGART. we lose a galley to the waves.
change Vladivostock to a settler (lowers russian pop and we get a settler for that void nearby).
some workers road.

2-germans and england are up Banking, Astro and Metal. see what i can fish for. as Cop's is out, see if i can get banks. you know the drill. no deal.
more worker moves.

3-cathy is annoyed im violating her. youd think she would be grateful for some attention ;)

we have LOTS of blues on the borders, and i guess before long will will have some blue bruises and a few very successfull blues singers.
i change all of our Barracks'd townes to knight. that is all THREE of our rax'd towns. 3????? was i sleeping? change some builds to rax.
lower science to 10% we need to cash rush a lot of units.
rushed loads of stuff in our core. mostly finishing builds so i can start next turn churning some dust up.

IBT- see even more blues on the way. you'd think im at a rave for all the weird lights. :crazyeye:

7- WDC knight > knight, Boston court > rax, Phily lib > rax, Atlanta knight > knight, Chicago lib > rax, Delaware aqua > rax, St louis harbour > cannon,
and i get a new wing to our palace. get a second floor so i can see the bloodshed better.
build Baltimore > cannon
my first counter is outside Rostov. an exsausted AC charges form the wall against a crusader and kills it (but is redlined) hope the 2 swords there can fend 2 MDI + 2 pikes away. the second AC kills a pike. now we are safe so wait to heal and fresher knights to arrive.

IBT - havent counted on the german fog. out came the hordes of doom. we barely hang onto Rostov and our dear silks.
starting to think Bizzies PJ party wasnt such a bad idea after all. maybe ill grow to like big blonds?

8- rush 3 more knights. this is getting to be quite expensive. hope these magnificent 7 will save the day.
as i am facing overwhelming odds at Rostov and due to our having more silks, i decide to abandon :cry: it. it will take them some time to get there and forward, and give us some time to coordinate a counter attack (e.g. scorched earth tactics)

move some knight to the Northern front, as i have some AC in Yaroslav (now with rushed walls) to hold there, and having seen that SoD i want more protection .

IBT- Yaroslav loses an AC to a Knight.

9- WDC knight > knight, NYC knight > knight, Yaroslav walls > rax, Atlanta knight > knight,
moving and hoping to get there in time.

IBT- lose an AC in the north after killing a knight and wounding another. fair trade i guess.
yaroslav holds on killing another knight.

10 - movement mostly. no combat this turn, but expect heavy fire during the following turns,
we have about 15-20 ebnemy units heading our way, so keep on rushing those knights.
after we reestablish Rostov (which fell into thier borders. stupid me) and kick them around abit we can restart our glorious plan.

in the meantime here is a small plan to warm your hearts
we lost a few troops, but they lost more.

watch for happiness issues as we are at 0% lux now.
i may have left a unit or two on automove. sorry.

lesson learnt - never get involved in a land war in asia!!

also about that Forbidden Palace.
that Icy city south of WDC on the west coast. with fully forested tile a harbour and a duct, it can produce lots of shields, and i couldnt find a better location if it fell on my head.

I think our god-like powers have enabled us the right to break variants when forgetful. This is just an intervention of the gods for our humble and backwardly-cultured nation vs the evil, and sinful germans who ruthlessly declared war for our god-given silks.

Still no research capacity to speak of so hire a scientist in Washington and leave it at that.

Buy Lizzie's World Maps for Silks then sell her Ivory for 175g, use the cash to rush a barracks somewhere.

Germans lay a single knight up against Moscow and kill an AC, but the bulk of their visible force heads off to the NW

Not much else to do but move a knight into the garrison at Moscow.

I can buy Banking from the Korean but we don't need it and can't sell it, on the other hand I can buy Astronomy from him for Metallurgy and some ivory and then get Banking from Arabia. Turns out Abu was less interested in Astronomy than Chemistry so I get Banking for Chemistry and 62g. Then I sell him Metallurgy for Wines and 68g. THen spend 116 of that on a TEMPLE Atlanta to keep the Bulldogs from growling.

In 470 my problem is at Moscow again as the German knights in shining armor appear at the doorstep and kill a garrison knight. I am now at six to two against.

I am going to try and improve those a little by attacking a German pike at Yaroslavl hoping for an army but there is no joy in that battle.

At Moscow kill a knight lose a knight from Novgorod and that's the best I can do.

Germans switch their attack to Novgorod.

In 480 I give Orenburg to the Iroquois and Yaroslvl back to the Russians.

Then the Germans start down the road to the core so I double cross our buddies the Iroquois and pay Otto 20g for peace. Otto has MilTrad now so it would only have been a matter of time before he wiped us out seeing as we have all of 16 effective troops and none with a defense greater than 2.

Then turn up the heat on the alchemists so we can get to Military Tradition and start a more effective military build up.

In 500 sell Banking to Russia for 50g and Chivalry to Hiawatha for 10g.

In 520 pop a settler out of Yakutsk to plant a town in the lost territory up north

Build Denver in 540.


And in 550 plant Cincinnati in the north.

I take it we're up the creek, cuilturally, right now. Could we not gain some terrain off the russians with a war? Or would we be better off building up our culture right now and planting towns up to slowly gain the terrain back by offensive settling on our side of the border?
 
And without a paddle. Russia is a 2 city wonder right now. And they are ripe for the plucking as soon as we get an army. And some towns built up against their border.

We need three things: settle the Empty Quarter, get culture in there soonest, more troops (preferably cavalry). We don't have anything Otto needs right now so I don't anticipate any demands. He settled a silk city probably a turn or two after demanding them, the bum.
 
so the plan is:
consolidate and eat a good dinner > culture up, maybe catch the Stones, on this, thier last tour? > cav up and hire some cowboys so we can party @ Dodge city? > take cathy for a joyride in the hills? avoiding the annoying FBI if we can. i hate it when i get caught by a shoe imprint or somesuch.

If we can get it built quickly in a town that can produce shields once it's done. If that's the plan we might want to put the shields for the FP now abuilding on the SE coast into a university or something, and plan on putting the FP in Washington.

Even better than that would be to burn the midnight oil keeping Marx and Engles at work and lining straight for Communism, and putting the FP and the SPHQ in the appropriate places.
 
Pre-Turns: Change only one thing: cathedral in philly for an aqueduct, as it will benefit more from population right now than from a couple earlier culture points.

T1: NYC Knight bis, we need reinforcements in our troops or we'll fall prey to stupid demands from Otto.

T3: We get MT, upgrade 3 cavs and await 3 more. 5 should be sufficient to wipe out a handful of pesky russian cities. And they aren't even communist yet.

IT: Everyone is going crazy about Shakespeare's and Bach's and Smith's

T5: Declare on Cathy

IT: England gets smith's

T6: We're 4 turns late on physics, but england is (should be) the lead techer, and since they are going to research magnetism, we can take ToG and have a shot at a monopoly tech

IT: Beth also grabs Shakespeare's theater

T10: 1 Elite 1 dead at Yaroslavl'. The last russian city has at most 3 muskets in it, considering it was founded with only one as an escort (I saw it) a couple turns ago.

You will need to MM Delaware back to normal food supply, I MM'ed it to get FP 2 turns earlier. Things are starting to recover from the dark days of the german war. We have at least 8 spots we can fill with settlers in due time, but we're kindof short on gold - unless we give up on the ToG gamble.

EDIT: I am guilty of forgetting the variant as well :blush: . I played my turns fast and gave in to a couple demands. In my defense I believe this is a very hard variant. Not giving in to demands on higher levels can be disastrous. If we were going all out military it would be ok, but to win by culture...sigh.

I really don't feel comfortable building culture with no military with Germany on our borders. Let's take them out, then build culture.
 
Taking Germany out sounds like a huge challenge, but with enough artillery we can make it. No biggie about the variant. We're in enough trouble as is. About the FP, it's more for commerce than for production.
