B02: God is an American

US ? Teaching You ??

I was actually thinking of something very different for B03, though seeing this variant re-played could be interesting. I'm very inclined towards bonus food starts, as opposed to this bonus shield/gold one, and this has (again) shown the grumpy stubborn old gremlin inside my head that it is tough with low food.

What I mostly miss is the would-be Oil wars ...

Methos, I think the germans started off very strong, with a great start spot, archers and spears, and they had a successful early war against Hiawata. They also had early contacts with the other continent through the north pass. That jumpstarted them to glory with an early cavalry force.

As for us, we had a hard time with wars because of some flips and some pesky germans coming down from the Deutch plains. But on DG+, the extra settler, combined with a good food/shield start, makes the AI really strong.

SW, your spot is safe and merrily kept. I've been thinking that a spanish inquisition thing could be fun. Something like:
-Non-christian civs reaching their form of belief (like polytheism for Egyptians and Indians, monotheism for arabs, mysticism for Iroquois) must be treated as AW opponents;
-Mandatory Monarchy as 1st govt, must build temple as 1st or 2nd build in every town (2nd if 1st is military).
-All off-land wars must be fought using only conquistadors, and an eventual army. In the case of an army, it must be filled with conquistadors or 1 (2)knight, 1 MDI and 1 longbowman - the typical kind of mixed army of the time AFAIK. Later we could change that to 1 (2) Cav and 2 Infantry.

What do you think?

i lik religious motifs, but make sure the monk doesnt see this part. you know how he feels about those useless shield wasters ;) (right, Bede?)

a bit rigid, but doable. just a stupid question. what do we fill the earlier armies with?

THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO!!!

I think we won't get much earlier armies, all we'll do is make spears and defend until astronomy - and then we will already have knights, MDI, and we'll be underway to get longbows, most likely.

About diff, I want to fool around, so it will most likely be warlord or regent.

Edit: The inquisition

If I may, what was it that you all believe led to the downfall?

The start was food adequate at best, and the lands to the immediate north not much better. Thus we had a slow expansion to the north that got hemmed in by the Russians early.

The early Russian war was necessary but costly and brought us into conflict with Germany. The territory gained from Russia had promise of being far more productive if we had had the chance to develop it but with Germany as a neighbor with a defiant requirement was asking for trouble, and we got it in spades.

America is a tough, tough nation to play to victory on a standard map above Emperor, and not easy at Emperor. And cultural victories are even tougher for America. The national traits are not helpful until later in the game (no cheap culture, no early UU, no cheap warfare with lots of leaders and armies).

In short, a combination of level, nation, and map made this game play a lot harder than it looked on the face of it, and none of the "tricks up our sleeves" worked.

BTW, the way this game was playing gave me the idea for the TGOMTG game.
