Back to GEM after a break and God it's SLOW!

I have a brand new computer with an AMD super chip in it... so perhaps it's that? (7570 or something like that).

My game lags when I´m opening the city screen and when I change the specialist and worker tiles.

One thing I found out is, that when I open the city screen via the new production button (the one that you get when there is no project in your city) instead by clicking on the city itself causes no slow down at all. As clicking on the new production button only open the left side of the city screen, without specialist info, I think the slow down has something to do with the way the mod handles the specialist screen.

I also have some lag, when a wonder is finished and when certain techs are finished researching.

After getting G&K and before installing GEM + CiVUP, I played a vanilla game until a diplomatic victory without any lag. The game run smooth all the time.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk earlier on the drivers but I believe both makers of processors had drive updates just around when fall patch game out (lots of optimization was done to the game too).

There are several other navigational ones like the city screen, but for me the end turn is definitely the worst offender.

In the most recent GEM I played (Back in Sep I believe) end turn was also by far the worst offender. For example in G&K at the beginning of the game it would instantly finish a turn while GEM was 1-2s (not too bad). Once I got to mid-game G&K would be 5-10s while GEM would be 30+.

I have found exactly the same thing.

I get about a half second pause when opening.
Maybe a half second when changing the specialists.
maybe a half second pause when closing the city screen.

Thats with 6 cities currently turn 316 as Korea.

Do you encounter the same momentary pause when exiting the city screen?

Yes, but the delay is a little bit shorter when exiting the city screen.

One thing I want to point out again is, that there is no lag at all (in/out), when I enter the city screen via the choose production button.

Here a short recap where I encounter lag:

City screen (In/out)
Changing worked tiles, specialists
Changing city focus

I've always wondered, if I wanted to increase performance of Civ5, would I need to upgrade my RAM or Proc or GPU? What does civ do when it's churning through AI turns taking time?

Im running:
- Vengeance LP 8GB DDR3 1600MHz CL9 Dual Channel Kit (2 x 4GB)
- Intel Core i5-2500k @ 3.30GHz
- on a Asus P8Z68-V LE mobo

As far as I'm concerned, assuming a respectable current-gen PC, it's all CPU for turn-time processing. I currently run an i7-2600k @ 4.5GHz and there was a massive increase in turn time after I upgraded from my previous PC (Q6600 @ 3.4GHz). My turn time speed nearly doubled during end-game scenarios (hundreds of turns in). GPU-wise, both machines ran constant at 60 FPS at their respective resolutions, so there was no GPU bottleneck (also GPU-Z confirmed). I'm building my little brother an i5-3570 system for Christmas with other similar specs as mine, so I'll see if I can notice the difference between his i5 and my i7.

Comparison
Current PC: i7-2600k @ 4.5GHz, 16GB DDR3 1600MHz, GTX 680 4GB FTW+ @ 2560x1600
Previous PC: Q6600 @ 3.2GHz, 4GB DDR3, Radeon 5870 2GB @ 1920x1200

Thanks for the response, I will keep my eye out for some CPU sales this xmas and upgrade mine if I find one :)

I'd like to hear more about this.
I left the game last spring due to turn times in VEM.
Vanilla had problems as well. For ex. I could only use DX9 and had crashes with using airplanes.

I found that I can now play vanilla G&K through the industrial age at very playable speeds in DX11.
I found that GEM was slow but nice through turn 50. By turn 100 I was waiting 50 seconds. No problem with city screens, but I had other issues that caused me to abandon game. I noticed that the biggest lag was waiting for between pressing "next" turn and waiting for the other civs to start their turns.

I did a run through with CivUP only to turn 100. The speeds seemed much better than with GEM.

Is it enough to max out the RAM on this computer from 6 to 8GB or should I invest in a new computer with a new kind of processor?

I am also noticing a little lag on locking down tiles.

This especially. Turn times add about 15-20 seconds in the late game from the mod it looks like (mostly dealing with the AI), but the most noticed lag point is changing or locking tiles. Opening the city screen takes an extra half-second to second or so as well. But it doesn't appear to hang the game as tile management does.

I also get the lag changing tiles. I also get a lag when selecting units garrissoned inside of cities. I don't get a lag when selecting units in the open. I also get a lag when embarking/disembarking land units onshore/offshore. As I noted before, this lag only appears in the late game, and is not present in the early game.

When people are acting towards Civ like they would act towards Crysis you know there's a problem:)

It seems that RAM doesn't help?
So what is the minimum processor to play GEM to the industrial age without crashes or major slowdowns?
Can you name an intel chip? I know little about these things?
I see that there are I5 and I7 chips being sold.
