I've been getting backstabbed by AIs quite a lot my last few games:

These two backstabs came <5 turns after our Declaration of Friendship. Neither had any military nearby, and Byzantium in particular isn't in any particular position to wage a successful war in any case. I haven't any problems with either of them (even have the ever-so-wonderful "no contested borders" modifier. With all that, I assume they were purchased.

Anyone else seeing more treacherous AIs lately? And isn't backstabbing just a couple turns after a DoF a pretty silly idea?

One of the most annoying things about getting backstabbed is getting the "Your friends found reason to denounce you" modifier. You would think that the backstabber should get a diplomacy malus for not being loyal. I just don't get why other civs should dislike you more for being the victim of backstabbing

The denouncement one is fine. They don't do that kind of back stab unless they're REALLY pissed at you, and I think having a penalty for getting a supposed friend that upset is fair.

This one was originally shown as "Other civs they like more than you have denounced you", which wasn't very clear because it was only your friends denouncing you; I have changed the text key.

It's a Firaxis modifier; when denounced by a friend, you get -20 opinion with all civs whose opinion of the denouncer is better than their opinion of you. It's worth noting that the denouncer also gets a backstabbing malus.

Seems like it could be exploited by a human player:
1 make DoF
2 backstab
3 rest of the world -20 diplomacy with your victim

Am I missing something?

You also get a penalty for denouncing a friend, so it's a double-edged sword at best. Also, they only get the penalty if the other civs like them less than you.

Additionally, the penalties for denouncing a friend are generally greater (it affects Approach as well as Opinion).

And if you denounce two or more friends or DoW any friends, the penalty for any civs you denounced isn't applied.
