Backstabbing Leaders...

I was on good ratings with Monty. But he still declared war on me. Even though I was vastly more powerful than him and defeated him hardly losing any units and annexed his entire civ...

I guess he was just pissed that one of my cities was encroaching on his capital's culture.

Since my last post was the last one on the first page il just say this again.

I think Louis XIV is probably an even bigger backstabber then any other leader in the game.

He will declare war on you from anywhere without a reason even if hes on good relations with you.

He was pleased with me one game and he declared war on me anyway and i had a decent garrison too.

Hes not even an aggressive trait leader but man is he a backstabber.

I find that there are the obvious backstabbers like monty, but you really need to look out for both the french leaders. Louis and Napoleon will attack with a weaker army if they think they can even take one city. Whenever I play against them, I always keep an army within 2 moves of my border cities, because the second they move away from the french borders, its immediate war.
Isabella is probably the most predictable of the bunch because she will always found a religion (always budism?sp) and if you are any religion but hers, she will go to war with you. If you are the same religion as her, she is your best friend for the entire game.

Xanik that's very interesting, I'm curious why you quoted my post though which doesn't seem to be particularly relevant?

In my current game, I have Shaka, Alexander, Ragnar, and Hannibal (what luck) as neighbors each on the same continent. I went for an early religion, and have them all under my religion now so our relationship is please and or friendly right now… The only thing that is keeping them from attacking me is my tech lead… I have them all by 4 or more techs, but my military is weak (6 of 8). Sooner or later one or more of them is going to turn on me, so I have been giving techs away (after I built the wonder, if I want it). I might have them all attack Isabelle, nobody likes her and she is weak.

I hate that sunva***** Catherine....whenever she is my neihter she always mass builds in the medevil era and has caught me by surprise on more then one occation with a vast army of War Elepants and Macemen....needless to say I HATE HER!!!

Ramsess II and me usually get along, because unforchinly for Ramesses in my games he always has a warlike leader beside him(Monty or Shaka), so although he's annoyed at me, I'm safe :)

The question was who is a backstabber, not who is aggressive. So for example, Caesar, Saladin and Isabella can be aggressive, but will rarely backstab their friends. Toku and Stalin can never be described as backstabbers because they rarely have any friends. In my experience the biggest backstabbers are Louis, Alexander and Qin.

I disagree about saladin.

Saladin is more peaceful then gandhi even. I can tell you why!

Ive had him friendly with me and at war with a common enemy and he still WOULD NEVER declare war on them for anything; its redded out "I just dont like you enough" WELL YOUR FRIENDLY HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU LIKE ME!

In otherwords you can never convince saladin to war with anyone. Thats why i usually kill him. Hes worthless as a friend except to trade techs with.

I've been backstabbed by Sally actually. We were friendly the whole game THEN he founds his own religion and later our relations go down to +4 which should've been OK, but he still attacks, so I would still consider that backstabbing.

So apparently (in my experience) religious nuts will have a chance to backstab you no matter how friendly you were for the past 1000's of years as long as your religion becomes different from theirs somehow.

I guess he will just never enter a war for you.

The declare war list is always redded out even when hes friendly with me.

If that common enemy's power rating is signifigantly higher than Saladin's, then he is not going to declare war no matter what.

I used to attempt to be Catherine's friend every game, because in 1 or 2 games she supplied me with techs and always helpled me in war, but after that I have gotten very unlucky because no matter what her reletions are to me, she always randomly backstabs me during the middle ages, even when she's pleased and we are of same religion. So I hate Cat.

Other backstabbers are Alex, because he always gets pleased with you so quickly, and thus gives you a false sence of security, also the French leaders are dicks, Louis always declares war on me when he's pleased, like Cat.

Louis, Alexander then the chubby little chinese guy.

Best buddies til your back is turned!

Alexander always attacks early on and no one seems to get along with him so he's not normally a problem, but Louis bides his time. Thinking about it, Napoleon is similar, but not as suicidal.

I had at least 2 units in each city along his border, and not just warriors. Archer/Longbowmen and either a swords or axemen. Oddly his invasion force of only 3 knights charged into my military city with 6 macemen.

But 2 archers is not exactly going to ward him off if he's coming with knights! axemen? If he has knights why don't you have at least macemen?

Well I suppose the best proof is that if you really were as well defended against him as you say, then you wouldn't care thta he declared war would you? Because you'd win easy.

I had a frustrating game where my friend Wang Kon accepted Mali (my enemy about to be destroyed) as a vassal- so he declared war. This could be a backstab or the AI not realizing he would declare war on me after accepting Mali as a vassal.

Yeah...it's been posted before that the AI doesn't take into account everything when accepting/declaring war on vassals.

And I didn't know you had Aggressive AI on. Please, if you are posting here, make mention of it--everyone is a backstabber on Aggressive AI mode.

The most annoying leaders (backstabbing) are: Napoleon, Montezuma, Alexander, Saladin and Genghis Khan.

The most trustworthy: Catherine, Elizabeth, Brennus, Cyrus, Hatty and Roosevelt.

I'm not sure that you can trust Izzy, she once declared war on me when we had same religion, no borders, same enemies and good trade relations. That actually didn't matter, I didn't give her a chance to invade coz I pwned her galleons.

The redded out statement is usually "We fear their military might!" in that case, tho.
