Bad decision

In BNW, I've discovered the hard way it's a bad decision to wipe out your neighbours early. It was always a good idea before!

Playing as Attila, only had Ashburnipal to deal with on my continent - sweet I thought, I'll get rid of him, expand out and become a superpower! Wiped him out, then spent the next 150 turns with no one trade with, losing money and having stagnant research.

Learned my lesson... anyone else got any tips on how to deal with a lack of trade partners in the first third of the game?

City states will always trade with you, although they can be hard to find depending on your map setting. If you literally wiped out every other nearby civ, tough luck :)

The only advice I have is - don't do it again

Unless you think you can wipe the entire map in one swoop, never kill a CS and always leave civs with 1 city. They're serious with those warmonger penalties now =p

My first BNW game found my self on a small continent with only America and many tiles of ocean all around. No contact with any other civs until turn 150. I made sure I did everything friendly with America and kept units on my borders. Fortunately he was a good partner.

Barbarians are smarter/stronger than in previous versions. Get 1-3 archers asap. Also tile development needs to be asap. Keep safe early game don't be too 'greedy'

It's not always a bad idea. I played a game with Rome on a continents map last week where I wiped out Spain, Germany and Morocco by the end of the classic era. Which gave me a full era to flesh out my conquered empire and develop a stranglehold on the city-states on my continent. Then I easily cruised to a diplomatic victory.
