Bad news: Next patch on hold

Well if every single person didn’t care about Pirates! (even the people at Firaxis), I bet you would already have a patch. That is not the case, though. There are a lot of people looking forewords to it (I am one) and so some other things have to be put aside.

Well, it is appropriate to this forum as the next version of Civ uses the Pirates graphics engine and the people who could potentially work on a Conquests patch are either working on Pirates or Civ4 . The fact that most of the company is tied up in getting Pirates out the door before Thanksgiving is extremely relevant to the fact that the next patch is on hold.

Pirates aside, and speaking of bags of money; how are sales for CIV Complete doing? Anybody know? :p

Well, going by what warpstorm said a few posts back, Civ 3 does not pay the bills over at Firaxis, so they can't be too optimistic about it ;)

(P.S. I'm still waiting for a post going somewhere along the lines of "hi i bought civ 3 play the world last week and now i want to know if i should buy civ 3 complete????")

Aren't we many, however, if they can already read, well I doubt if they would ask...

Jimkirk, this is kinda off topic, but here are aa few ways that I can think of off the top of my head.

First, it allows an near infinite number of zoom levels.

Second, it allows for nearly any screen resolution.

Third, it simplifies unit creation. Really. Currently, the artists build 3d models and animations for the units. These are then rendered out frame by frame to the 2D animations and then cleaned up. This would cut out that step. You can also have more detailed animations, as techniques like skeletal animation are available to you.

Fourth, on modern systems, 3D graphics have less CPU overhead than 2D as the video card is doing a fair amount of the work. This may free up the CPU for important things like AI.

Fifth, you can make more natural looking terrain, with rolling hills and plains of various heights, rather than picking between a few hill tiles or plains tiles.
