They are EVERYWHERE. And god forbid you have a few clumped trade routes... one barb warrior wandering over suddenly turns into an army of horsemen.

I actually kinda like it :). It's fun to have to defend yourself beyond putting an archer in your capital.

Do they get free ships from plundering your sea route?

Now I'm imagining a new barbarian privateer whenever your cargo ships are undefended.

That's why we had barbarian Battleships? Kinda ridiculous. How can they comandeer a ship like that? Hope we don't see them that late into the game.

So I guess as someone who plays as Aztec most of the time, honor is a very attractive opener now?

It certainly makes the Honour opener much more attractive.

The Honor opener is very useful when you want to defend your sea trade routes. You get told when a new barb camp pops up in the part of the world you have explored, so you can take it out before it starts spawning ships (barb camps always spawn initially with a land unit, not a ship).

Good, it's not just me then. I lost my first game last night because the map was so clogged with barbarians that I had to devote all of my resources to military units instead of settlers or libraries. The AI didn't seem to have any problems though.

I've read a few people saying that the default setting for barbarian seems to have been set to raging. Is this the cause of the problems?

I don't know the numbers behind it but it seems the barb frequency li.d of similiar to the GEM mod. There were some starts that it seemed all I did was barb hunt, which I thoroughly enjoyed. plus you didn't dare send out a worker unprotected. I very much like this change!

The change was a required one I think. I have always felt that Honor was a bit underpowered in some ways. With the new spawning rate I find that honor is better balanced against the other opening options, as one can collect a massive amount of culture thanks to the increased number of barbarians to kill.

Is it just me or are barbs spawning faster than before?

Yes, they certainly are. Also, camps seem to be appearing at a higher rate (more akin to what they did in Vanilla).

Honor was pretty attractive even in G&K. (The opener was, at any rate.)

The closer was and is amazing, too. Maybe more amazing now. It can really drive your economy through war.

All this sounds very interesting - picking up my BNW tomorrow.

One thing I never understood about barbarians (even though I was quite glad) - for some reason, they never seemed to heal properly even when left alone for a while and not moving - even when in a camp.

Anyone know why? Has this changed with BNW?

I think this is intentional (healing + fortified barbarians would be incredibly strong and annoying).

It hasn't changed with BNW, they only spawn faster but don't heal.

The barbs are pretty annoying. I had three or four barb horsemen come out of nowhere and pillaged three of my wine plantations, and then poof! They scooted back out. :(

I've even had my cities attacked few times xD They only knocked off like 20% of the hp lol.
