Hello I hae played civilization many thimes and the same thing keeps happening everytime I make a city two group of warrior barbarians come with axes even though everyone else has log swords and they take all my cites have anyone else experiencedd this and can you help

Here is a very brief list of options:

  • Fogbusting. Barbarians only show up in unclaimed and 'invisible' terrain -- the Fog of War.

Put a unit on a hilltop outside your cultural area to reveal more tiles. The more tiles you can see, the less likely it is for barbarians to appear. This also gives you plenty of prep time in case barbarians do appear.

  • Chariots. Chariots are superb anti-Axeman units. Consider building some if you have Horses nearby.

  • No Barbarians. There is also the option to turn Barbarians completely off. The downside to this is that barbarians are easy XP for your early units.

You can also build the Great Wall wonder. It won't stop barbarians from killing your explorers, settlers, and workers who venture past your cultural borders, however.

Axemen can also perform barb-busting duties although not as well as chariots in my opinion.

Chariots can also perform good double duty as fogbusters since they have access to the sentry (+1 sight range) promotion.

When you build your second city, if you are not creative, make sure you are claiming a military resource in your inner ring. Long term potential of a site means nothing if you don't get to the long term. The earlier you get the resource hooked up and start pumping real units, the less chance you have of getting pillaged or set back in any way.

No barbarians is a really lame option because it will be infinitely harder to get well trained troops in the early going.

Keep in mind that chariots are good against axemen only if you have warlords. If not, you need your own axemen, hopefully with combat 1 and shock promotions.

Also, there's no great wall if you don't have warlords.
