Barbarians

This is so beautiful.....thank you jade......

Barbs just 'know' in my experience. i think of them as armed and radical intelligentsia. I've never opened an embassy, (brilliant OnS) but I have routinely bribed their units - I even permit/encourage this in order to accumulate 'none' units.

Regarding barbs 'disappearing' - I have followed this through the cheat at the king/emperor level and they do not disappear - they seem to be pre-destined for points of engagement. So, if they vansih from sight, assume they have alighted upon better pickings. :)

Andu is probably playing at a level that has come to be called "Barbarian Wrath." You get this by modifying the Rules.txt (I think that's the right file) to add an additional level of barbarian activity beyond "Raging Hordes." This makes barbarian leaders worth 200 gp and leads to uprisings that have several dozen units in them.

Dozens is a bit of an understatement. Each horde contains 98 units plus one leader at the very bottom -- good luck at getting 200g out that particular leader!

Sounds good...does this modification have any side effects? (I might make it!) Also, how, exactly, do you make this modification?

The file that needs to be modified is the games.txt file, under the "barbarity" section. You can add either one or two levels; it's been my experience that after that, you no longer get barbarians of any kind.

Also, it doesn't work for the Multiplayer Gold edition; consequently, if you have the MPG edition, you have to "retrofit" to the 2.42 patch.

Yes, which brings me to the question once more...how do you know what version/edition you have?
In the game, click the menu "Game"->"Game Options", and look at the bar at the top of the dialog that appears. Here it should say what version you have. It should at least be 2.42 (the classic version), and if less, you should download the 2.42 patch.

EDIT: For the rest of the version numbers, see Mercator's post below.:) I shouldn't speak of what I do not know...

Actually it's in Game.txt - Make a copy of the unaltered file for archival purposes of course.

You go into the file and search for Raging hordes - you will find a list of the barb levels. Simply add an extra line with "Barbarian Wrath" or "Pulsating Throngs" or whatever you want to call it immediately following the "raging hordes" line.

I don't know if this causes barbs to appear more frequently or not, and I don't think it affects Pirates, but what it will do is put 99 barbs into the stacks that spawn on land.

The only side effect I am aware of is that it can only be loaded using Classic Civ. I know MGE won't recognize the file and I'm not sure about FW.

I know adding deity+n levels can cause the title-bar headings on a few of the dialog boxes to get messed up. Doesn't really affect game play, tho. Not sure whether adding the barb level has a similar effect.

Unlike the Deity+n levels, you can only add the one extra level of barb activity. Adding two lines will cause it to crash or something similarly evil.

Edit: Oops. Need to look for page 2 next time. Sorry.

FW does work with one extra level of barbarian activity.

I just realized that in an ancient game of mine, the Japanese were still defending their cities with Warriors and Phalanxes when my Armors turned up on their li'l continent; how the heck did they survive piratical attention up to then?

It depends on the difficulty level; I've fiddled around on the lower levels with cheat mode and watched Phalanxes take out Barb Armor. It's sort of amusing to watch.
