Bede01:Funny thing happened...

EDIT: It looks good while I'm typing it here but posting squishes all type together.

Government- Despotism Republic
Hurry Method Forced Paid
Corruption Rampant Nuisance
War Weariness - Low
Worker Rate 100% 100%
Military Police 2 0
Draft Limit 2 1
Town 4 1
City 4 3
Metropolis 4 4
Unit Cost 1 2

In towns we are now enjoying 4 free units while Repub only gets 1 until we grow to city size which is 7 pop. We are having enough trouble keeping 6 happy at this point. Also Unit cost is 2g vs 1g in Despo. There is also no MP in Repub. I'm just saying when we get the Repub tech don't immediately revolt. We have to prepare for the revolution. That will take markets, lux and more towns.

Unfortunately, the happiness factor with markets doesn't really kick in until we get a 3rd lux... OTOH... some of the gold that we could produce with Republic could go to the lux slider... and markets certainly help with the gold...

I want to throw out one thing here...there is a far flung and (apparently) unsettled patch of land at the other end of this landmass. Now this is a rather long-term play, but what would be the possibilities with a FP up there, and a far-flung second core at the other end of this continent? We could have a rather large empire without a lot more conquest... at least, on this landmass...

Perhaps we should consider a peaceful, carefully managed Middle Ages, setting up to do some serious damage in the industrial age (or pursue Space Race/Diplo). If we can get a monopoly on the luxuries on this continent, that should give us a bit of trading leverage...and if all the other AI are on another landmass, it's only a matter of time before they decide to fight each other... if they're all on another continent together, it would explain why we're so far behind already tech-wise...

I'm "thinking out loud" here... so if anyone doesn't think any of this has merit, don't feel like you'd hurt my feelings if you don't like these ideas..

I'm thinking that an FP there will be good after an FP in Arab lands to build infrastructure. I am reasonably sure the AI will get a few cities up there prior to us getting it all. It's just too much jungle and a lot of settlers. This is certainly shaping into a Space Race by the looks of it. We are going to have a lot of cities someday. I'm already thinking communism once we have the entire continent to increase shields in our far flung empire. We'll see how it plays out. Right now, we need to settle the balance of the SE lands and get rid of some barbs. The move to another gov't worries me more. Have to time the changeover and GA together I think or we will be extremely broke.

Hmmm... as much of a pain as the barbs have been to the SE... there's no evidence of AI settlement competition from that direction... why not work out way towards the NE, and settle the outlying lands to the SE later (but before the AI can reach them... If the AI are closer to those lands to the NE, then it would follow that they'll have to go around that area to get to out SE...

...still 'thinking out loud' here...

Well done, Ms. C

Got it.

Play and post tonight.

P.S. I don't see any iron yet?

I Hear America Singing

I Hear America Singing

Walt Whitman

I HEAR America singing, the varied carols I hear;
Those of mechanics—each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong;
The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work;
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat—the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck;
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench—the hatter singing as he stands;
The wood-cutter’s song—the ploughboy’s, on his way in the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown;
The delicious singing of the mother—or of the young wife at work—or of the girl sewing or washing—Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else;
The day what belongs to the day—At night, the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs.

In GOTM 29, Sir Pleb had a great write up about why the new C3C republic is preferred as early as possible. You actually end up making money with the new unit support structure. I'll see if I can find the post in the spoiler. Bottom line - let's go for Republic as soon as possible.

I didn't find it in the GOTM spoilers, but I did find this thread, which has some posts by SirPleb. Is this it? After reading through it, I now understand some things a bit better, and may look to see if I have some of my GOTM30 saves from the middle ages to revisit some things I think I screwed up...

We have 46 units and more in queue. We have 19 towns which in despo gives unit support of 76 units. If we were in Republic right now we would only get 19 units supported because we have 19 towns. That means paying for 27 units at 2g@ which is 54g. At present our cities make a total of 90g with 34 going to corruption and 13 to maintenance. In republic the corruption won't be a problem but the maintenance will still be there. So 90g minus 54g plus what ever else we build until then say, I see 5 units in 3 turns, thats 64g equals 26g left. Minus the 13 g in maintenance and we are left with 13g. That is assumming zero corruption which is not plausible. We will be broke. that is why I am suggesting we try to time a GA right as we come out of Anarchy. Don't pull the trigger on gov't change until a) we have only 2-3 turns left on peace with Abu and b) we have nearly researched currency or have it. Then pull the trigger and our income rises to 180 at this point. We have more settlers in queue so I would suspect that to be higher. During GA we can build 4-5 markets and that will really help offset our unit cost.
Right now the lack of lux is hurting us. We are liable to lose some pop during anarchy which does not help the cash situation.

I believe that was his argument why Republic is better than Monarchy while executin a domination goal and dealing with WW. It was not an article as to timing a gov't changover.

Brother Bede, could you please post a "Build more cities!" screencap of your domestic advisor? Your advisor is cuter than mine...

(Edit, cross-posted w/ SB)

@ Slinger - Oh, you are right! I was just trying to make the argument that we should eventually go to Republic and why it kicks butt. I think your points on the timing are spot on.

Playing now.

Dottie and the gang will be well represented in the report.

From sea to shining sea

First order of Bedus the Consul is to trade the Arab Law for Map Making. Second order is to turn down research on Republic to accumulate cash. Third order is a harbor in Antium. Apply the broadside of my boot to Hadrian and send him to Mecca to build the Forbidden Palace. Switch temple builds in all Arab cities except Khurasan to harbors (border expansion at Mecca will close things up). Set Anjar to equipping a worker. Dispatch some cavalry to the south and NE for barb suppression and exploration. Fortified curragh is sent to Antium for upgrade. Send settler and warrior out of Antium to build town SW of Pompeii.

T1 130BC
Moby Dick sinks the curragh at America's shores.
Barbarian horseman impaled on spear SE of Pisae.

T2 110BC
Move settlers into position. FP build dropped money corruption by 30%. America builds ToA

T4 70BC
Found Palmyra to claim spices.
Ravenna grows and riots.

T5 50BC
Found Jersalem SW of Pompeii

T6 30BC
Whack a couple of Iluryian horseman in jungles in NE.

T7 10BC
Arab galley sets sail west from Basra.
With two turns to go on peace with Abu, and ten to Republic, buy IW from Abe for 200g +15. And there is iron right outside of Rome! and another visible source between Anjar and Ravenna.
Whack two more Illuryian horsemen in the NE

T8 10AD
Whack some more Illuryians

T9 30AD
And some more

T10
Wipe out the Thracians in the south.
Whack some more Illuryian horsemen in the NE.
Found Caesarea on the east coast.

The Roman reach now extends east to west across the continent.
I hated giving Abe all that money for IW but it was necessary to meet our short term goal and we haven't met another soul. One could trade IW to Abu for Polytheism prior to removing him from our neighborhood. He does have a galley sailing somewhere so he will survive, to be renamed the Flying Dutchman. Republic will come in just as the road to the iron is finished.

My only qualm is the placement of Palmyra. I looked at that area a ton and thought that the spice city should have went 2 NE to be on the coast so that another city could have went 1 SW of current city to be on river. It'll all work out in the end due to our large size but I think it would have worked out better.
On the barb front we are really close to closing out the barbs in our south. A couple more settlers and it is clear. We can then proceed to Scoutsout coveted jungle expedition and the northern lands. We're cooking now.

We need a curragh in Caesarea. Sail it across that strait and see if anyone lives over there.

Let's keep the expansion going. We still have lots of dirt to fill up.

Good points, slinger. I lost track of where to put the town in a rush to get it placed before another herd of barbarians came out of the fog.

Take it away, scout!

Order of go
barbslinger-got us laurels and more land
Cuivienen-put Abu in his final resting place and met his brother Abe
Bede-killed a few barbarians and learned how to forge iron
scoutsout--gets to teach us how to vote and print money
Sir Bugsy-will show the Arabs the way to Paradise

Okay - I'm reading Bede's turnlog now, so this is a "got it, sort of" post. In light of earlier discussion between Sir Bugsy and Barbslinger re: timing the gov't switch... plus anything else the team would like to discuss... I will not play my turns immediately. I can either play later this evening, or I can wait until tomorrow if the team would like to analyze and strategize...

I don't lmow how much time is left on peace with Abu but I would get Repub and set for currency. Set up some prebuilds for markets and when you are ready to whack Abu get over there as we are in anarchy. Who knows how long anarchy will be, 3-8 turns, but when it ends, whack Abu for our GA and continue market builds. You have to see what is given to you. Definately continue expansion as currency is researched.

Edit: The spece needs hooked up too. That will help a lot.

I wish you guys leave out the Sir part, How about just Bugsy? It is more like

"Sir Bugsy the-not-quite-so-brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, who had nearly fought the Dragon of Angnor, who had nearly stood up to the vicious Chicken of Bristol, and who had personally wet himself at the Battle of Badon Hill"

Oh yes...guidance - 1. settle the south coast. 2. get a curragh across the eastern strait.
