Bede04C-The Griddle (C3C1.22Emperor)

Quintupled the empire in ten turns. That's better than building settlers. Nice job.

Plan the work and work the plan.

6 new towns. Great job.

How did you manage to get the French to give up so many towns? I suppose taking their capital twice had something to do with it!

Some thoughts:

We are still at war with Carthage. Reverse WW will expire when we sign peace. Does it also expire 20 turns after war is declared? el_filet you will have to be careful with possible rioting at some point.

We have gone from 4 free units to 28 in just 10 turns. Plus we have some Ancient Cavalry on the way. :D

We can trade for Polytheism with either Carthage or Greece.
with Carthage: Peace + Poly + 161g for CoL.
or with Greece: Poly + 29g for Philosophy.

Paris is the only flip risk. It requires just 1 unit to prevent it.

As we are forced to hire specialists due to some strange French torture methods, we may as well make use of them. I suggest changing all the tax collectors to scientists, then setting the science rate to 80% for Lit in 5 turns, 0gpt. After that set research to Republic.

@M60: Nicelly fought! My only question for the team:

Who's next? :hammer:

@el_filet, any progress?

sorry guys, the weekend turned out to be much busier then expected.

i can play it tomorrow evening, if that's too late, skip me.

Playing now.

A truly uneventful hour, the tedium relieved only by a barbarian camp spewing horsemen near Paris, a training ground for our AC.

Learned Literature and started the Great Library and am researching Currency at max. French towns got garrisoned so they are back to work making babies and workers for colonies if nothing else.

Oh, yeah, almost forgot. Hannibal allied Alex of Greece against us.

Hmm, not really much to say. We just need to improve our new towns whilst waiting for some more to be settled around us.

My only concern is that stack of French spearmen. Our ACs had better make sure they don't try anything stupid. ;)

War with Greece (and Carthage) is irrelevant at the moment.

Long, long first day on the new job. (It was a good one, just a long one...) I'll get this played tomorrow night.

It's been over 3 1/2 days since the save was posted so I will take this.

Got it. :)

Thanks Zak.

750(0)- One MM move in Lyons.

IBT- The French spearman stack I was worried about heads towards Marseilles.
Rheims, Worker > Harbour
Besancon, Worker > Harbour
Incan city of Cuzco completes the Pyramids.

730(1)- Our AC disperses a barb camp.

IBT- France get Currency

710(2)- zzz

690(3)- Tours grows to size 2 and has an unhappy citizen due to whipping (by the French). I hire a scientist.

670(4)/650(5)- zzz

IBT- Chartres, Harbour > Barracks

630(6)/610(7)- zzz

IBT- Currency discovered > Republic in 19 @ 90%.

590(8)- CRpMapStat tells me Rome have the Republic. Hopefully they will trade it soon. As the GLib is due next turn I shut off research. Tours scientist switched to tax collector.

IBT- Amsterdam, Great Library > Marketplace
Paris, Barracks > Spearman

570(9)- zzz

IBT- Carthaginians want an audience. They want Lit for peace. No!
The GLib gives us Polytheism and Construction. We enter the MA.
Lyons, Library > Barracks

550(10)- Tours has forgotten the whipping, so the second citizen is now working a BG.

Notes:

The peace deal with France has expired. All 3 of their towns are size 2. Should we attack yet or wait until they have sent out a couple of settlers?

Amsterdam is building a market, but it could build another wonder. Four are available: MoM, GW, GLight, ToA. The MoM can be built in as few as 8 turns.

Science is off due to the GLib. In the AA we only need Republic and Monarchy. Rome is the only civ with Republic, no one has Monarchy yet.

The French stack near Paris is barb hunting, not threatening us.

Most of our units are in or near Paris.

We can sell some techs for lots of cash. There is a lot of gold around.

Not much has changed so no image. Here is the save:

20k still seems a good option to me, so i vote for building MoM. since we don't do research, we can save some money and use it for rushing colloseum and market in amsterdam after republic comes in. suggest we revolt at soon as MoM is finished.

The save at 350BC

Preturn: Don’t think we need to go after the French just yet, so switch Amsterdam to MoM.

IBT- Iro building LHouse.

Turn 1 (530BC) Move a Ancient Cav.

IBT- French units move away from Paris and disappear by Rouen.

Turn 2 (510BC) Nothing

IBT- Lyons culture expands, French building LHouse. Greeks building GWall. French have 5 spears and a warrior 2NW of Rheims. Could be interesting.

Turn 3 (490BC) Worker actions. Nothing on the diplo front, Alex and Hannibal want to stay at war for a while.

IBT- French column splits up, so doesn’t appear to be any hostile intent.

Turn 4 (470BC) Still quiet. A few civs have monarchy, so we’ll pick that up in a second.

IBT- As promised, monarchy in and we’re happy with despotism. Rome has republic, so that should be up shortly. Zeus delivers AC. French settler by Besancon.

Turn 5 (450BC) OK, time for some diplo moves. Alex wants 80g for peace. Done. Now normally that would be a bad move, but he’s behind the others in tech, and I want his treasury. Sell Alex currency for 695g, all he has. Sell Lit to Caesar for 318g, leaving him 58. The others don’t have more than some loose change, so he won’t make much of it up selling to the others. Treasury up to 1359, 41gpt. Hannibal has 52 and needs lit, but he wants a lot of cash or lit for peace, so we’ll let him stew a while.

IBT- Romans building HG. French found Grenoble.

Turn 6 (430BC) Quiet again. Hannibal has a little more gold.

IBT- Another French settler pair appears.

Turn 7 (410BC) Worker actions. Carthage at 81 gold. OK, you can have Philo and peace for the gold. Puts the treasury at 1521. Reverse WW ends @ Amsterdam. Lux tax to 20% costs 5gpt more. Switch Amsterdam off MoM to HG. A slight risk here, but HG delivers 4cpt vs. 2 for MoM. And there are enough wonders in queue for us to be able to fall back on several. We should be able to get it though.

IBT- Incas and French start HG.

Turn 8 (390BC) More worker stuff.

IBT- Carthage and Greeks start HG. French found Dijon. Cuts the road between Lyons and Paris, but it’s surrounded by mountains, so not very defensible.

Turn 9 (370BC) Brennus picked up republic, so that will be in on the IBT.

IBT- Republic> Mono. Ancient Cav in. Lyons archer>archer. Tours harbor>cat (change if needed).

Turn 10 (350BC) AC pops in and out of Rouen’s area for a recon. Reg spear was showing. Change Lyons archer build to temple in 7, as it needs a taxman to stay happy. HG now in 3.

Post turn. After HG comes in, we can go to republic, then start up the French connection again. Note Rome has 361g in the bank, but nothing to trade for it.

Good catch, Doc. I missed the fact that with the Colossus we had the Seafaring half of the trigger in place. Well, the GWall wouldn't be a bad alternative. Either that or revolt now, which would be a short anarchy before Republic, and then finish the HG. Of course our UU isn't too far off in the future, either. Also noticed there isn't iron anywhere nearby.

Thanks for the catch on the HG Doc. With Republic in revolting now is probably sound.

350 BC (0):
revolt

IBT (290 BC):
tiwanaku (incas) built MoM
change gov to republic

270 BC (4):
change paris to temple

230 BC (6):
reduce lux
prepare attack on french (dijon, marseille & rouen)
change tours to worker

IBT:
hiawatha wants lit, say no: war
tours: worker->temple (pressure from romans)

210 BC (7):
delay attack on dijon to kill iro warrior

IBT:
declare on french

190 BC (8):
get 2 elite capturing rouen, we have horses now (barracks)
lose 2 AC agains reg spears in marseille :aargh:
change lyons to market (forgot tot MM last turn, wastes 13 shields)

IBT:
french get our worker :( (didin't expect a horseman, but i believe it was the last)
iros send warrior toward paris
amsterdam: market->colosseum
chartres: temple->spear
besancon: harbor->temple

170 BC (9):
capture maseilles->barracks
change chartres to horse
change rouen to warrior

IBT:
tours riots

150 BC (10):
fish a leader against french archer [dance]

notes:
leader (unmoved) for army, rush ToA or wait for Sun Tzu? (i vote for ToA after rushed colosseum&lib in amsterdam, let's go for culture (didn't rushed market because it only took 3 turns, but we really should to build Sun Tzu/sistine afterward))
hope frech will talk soon and give us some cities
don't move away spear N of dijon until road W of amsterdam is finished (or dijon captured/gifted :D)
try to get cities to size 7 to increase unit support
greeks may sell feudalism, would net us feudalism and hopefully give them money we can get for lit or republic (will probably trade for them with rome, but don't see a better option)
we're a little low on units in the S, but should be enough 'til peace
