Beer & The Common Cold

Dude, take it easy. It's really no joke about paracetamol and alcohol. If I were you I'd stop drinking beer and have some juice or lemonade with that pizza, watch a movie and go to sleep.

Finish the rest of the beer tomorrow or some time when you haven't taken paracetamol.

Ain't that the truth! :goodjob:

Brooklyn Style Pizza from Domino's!!! 8.5 of 10!

You did? Like, how much?

In Canada, you can get codeine without a prescription. That doesn't sound odd to anyone but an American... but as an American living in Canada it was new. Of course, it's a low dosage combined with a normal dosage of acetaminophen, so you had to take more to get the same effect.

Like an idiot, I would take ~3g of acetaminophen for the ~90mg of codeine while drinking. Often.

Learned my lesson: just extract the codeine :p

Did it leave any lasting problems?

Just a liver that's a bit older than me. Just don't drink as heavily and don't take acetaminophen in excess.

What good is codeine when you are drinking?

Interactions.

Do you have sources on the low self-esteem, cortisol, HGH thing? Sounds interesting...
No sources but I'd say alcoholism generally stems from feelings of lack of control/wanting to escape (I don't mean causal drinking but severe drinking just to feel ok) and those issues are generally coorlated with low self-esteem (confidence to change the situation), fairly high stress (cortisol is a hormone that is increased with stress, enough stress will eventually tax the adrenals and lower DHEA levels. Human Growth Hormone is one of the ways to measure aging, it contributes to keeping a person young and vital. It is raising thru exercise and (I think) feeling good in general.

So, it's kind of a vicious cycle I imagine. No sources showing alcohol directly lowers these factors (but I imagine it would) but in excess, it probably takes away from other activities/relationships that would keep these hormones steady.

well in my experience alcohol helps a cough(it was and perhaps still is an ingredient in cough medicines), but other than that I don't really think it helps anything

Joke thread.

I have a cold right now... I am congested, coughing, sneezing, and I sleep about 12 hours a night. Last night my woman begged me to go to dinner. I ordered my usual beer, and I felt great. I drank all night, got about 6 hours of sleep (my norm is 8), and woke up fine. I feel the cold again today, but during the effects of the beer, I was not congested, coughing, or sneezing.

However, anything beyond a cold... or when you mix in medication... not a good idea. You'll only make it worse. And I agree, it definately lowers your immune system defenses -- though you shouldn't be out on the town when sick anyway, so it shouldn't matter.

Yeah, this bug has been going around. I would guess a 75 percent infection rate for the people around here.

I have not had a cold in over a year since I started taking zinc tablets.

On the few occasions I have felt cold like symptoms, the best part of a bottle of high quality Barbados rum has always taken care of it;)

Do you speak like that?

No, I'm making fun of the Domino's commercials for it.

(Though some people do accuse me of having a New Yawker accent, at least it wouldn't be so thick it'd render my speech garbage outside of the area.)

Was this a non-New Yorker? ;)

One is a Texan-Southerner hybrid living in Minnesota that happens to be my girlfriend and my mother (immigrant though lived in NYC for 50 years) also made a mention of it.

Take that however you will!

And the Domino's pizza slices are bigger only because those Brawklun Stye-ul Pizzuhs have only six slices. :p

(The New York Times had a full report on the pizza last year.)

NYC pizza wasn't really my favorite. Too thin, IMHO. :p

Well I'm pretty sure alcohol lowers immunity.

Also, excessive drinking is generally a sign of low self-esteem and those with low-self-esteem probably tend to get sick more (probably have higher levels of cortisol, lower levels of HGH, etc.).

I have heard alcholism has been linked to a gene or set of genes in people, not specifcly to alchol but to addictions. Some people are more likely to become addiceted to mind altering substances, ill try to find a link but i heard that factoid from a bio proffesor.

Il post my granny's cure all for all.

1 cup of maker's mark
1 half frech lemon
2 tablespoons honey
most important is fresh sasaphrasie root. you can maybe buy this at a fresh market or natural health store, but my grandma used to keep all kinds of fresh roots, it has a specific looking leaf, if you want to find it in the woods just google it up for a pic.

:nono:

Come here to Brooklyn so you can have an ACTUAL Brawklyn Stye-ul Pizzuh!

Yeah, I can only imagine how badly you New Yorkers must cringe (:cringe:) every something like this happens. I know that it isn't the real thing to you, but I work(ed) for Domino's so, for me, I just call it that, because I am used to selling it that way. Hopefully, now that I've moved on out of running a Domino's joint, I can ween myself off of that kind of heresy, but I hope you will forgive me, in the meantime, during this transitional period.
