I recently had a game where Cyrus dogpiled me at pleased when I was his only ally. I eventually crushed him, but it cost me significantly. It was my mistake to ally with the jerk. Normally it's a bad idea, but I thought I could keep my military strong enough to dissuade him from backstabbing. Unfortunately I had lost too many units in a war against Boudicca and Monty and he stabbed me in the back when my power dropped.

Which AI's have been the most faithful allies for you in your games, and which the worst?

In my current game, the only guy that never gave me any trouble was Bismarck. Of course, he was horribly backwards and had some land I wanted, so I gave him a good backstab and twisted the knife a bit, so he's no longer around... :mischief:
In the game before that, I made the mistake of allying with Isabella... she got me from behind while I was busy with another war...
I once was allied with Catherine in a game I was playing as Arabia... I of course didn't come out on top that time around. Lesson learned with her...

Gandhi,,, Never seems to declare war on anyone.

Usually the warmongers that make significant gains in there first couple of wars tend to make good friends, as long as you keep them going after someone else through bribes and whatnot.

I always seem to have good luck with Nappy. Once you get him to pleased, just keep bribing him to attack someone else, and you'll be fine, especially if you join the wars too. In fact, the last two games he's been in, after he gained a lot of land from said wars, I signed a PA with him, and we easily won domination both times.

Catherine because she will do anything to anyone - high maintenance but oh so useful. She's also a good tech partner.

Tokugawa because he gets excellent units and I can safely feed him with military techs.

Montezuma because he is no long-term threat and willing to fight my wars for me (slightly religious, falls behind and doesn't beeline military techs as hard as other hardcore warmongers do, therefore being more controllable).

Frederick because he's a decent tech partner for a while and no long-term threat.

Shaka and Monty . They always take wars seriously, even when they don't have the technology to have decent results. Make very good garrison softeners if well handled

Good point about Shaka and Monty - those guys really will rally their troops and head for the sound of the gunfire.

I'm alway reminded of earlier Civ IV and other Civ versions, where your allies didn't seem to really fight for you. They'd declare war on someone but if they sent anyone to fight, it was one phalanx.

Cyrus always seems to be useful. He signs DPs at 'Pleased', and I've gotten away with having him 'Annoyed' without a war.

I personally don't think one A.I. is easier to ally with than another. I just take who ever comes up and make them my ally, as long as they aren't Monty and occasionally Shaka.

Tokugawa because he gets excellent units and I can safely feed him with military techs.

Toku's great as a friend (well, attack dog....). Sure, he'll declare at pleased, but cos he's such a xenophobic idiot, there's always going to be people he dislikes more than you :p

Fate has spoken; I was just considering making a thread similar to this. There are two large religious blocks in my game at the moment; Confucian and Jewish. The Jewish block is led by me, Shaka and Montezuma. The Confucian block is led by Gandhi and Cleopatra. I'm feeling pretty good about the upcoming war; I'll post back with how my erstwhile allies perform

Frederick and Zaraq Yaqob (ethiopia) never betrayed me, hell, even when I backstabbed them and then declkared peace after halving their empire tehy'd still clean my shoes if I asked.

Pericles has been a great ally to me in quite a few different games. Kept tech trading, getting into wars together, etc. It was touching.

Frederick once backstabbed me at friendly. I always had him at pleased at least, so he may have decided to war with me then. It was a rare future era start and he sent endless stacks of modern armor/gunships/mobile artillery at me. I lost.

But other than that I've never had him declare war on me.

I think Ghandi declared war on me once in my entire experience of playing Civ4.

Me too... and it was definitely pathetic. Gandhi attacked me with a swordsman and.... 2 budhist missionaries :faint:

I have a HoF game where Gandhi declared war on Shaka  Needless to say, that didn't go too well for Gandhi.

Brennus seems to be a good ally in some of my games.

I play with randomized personalities these days, and that makes for some surprising AI moves... I've seen an aggresive Ghandi a few times now, and lost to a diplomatic victory by... wait for it....

Genghis Kahn :faint:

Anyway, with the usual personalities, my favorite AI ally used to be Zara.
Born out of the idea: If you cant beat him, fight alongside him.

Zara Yarog... thingy of Ethiopia always my best bud if hes on game :]
Also Charlamagne thingy of Holy Roman... thingy
