You can post ancient names (ie anything pre-christian, to have a set timeline here ;) ) which you regard as cool or notable. They can be from any culture, but up to the end of the BC aeons :)

Some suggestions to start the thread:

-Telemachos (son of Odysseus, his name signifies one fighting a battle from a -safe- distance, tele + mache).

-Agamemnon (just a cool name, of no known etymology. The english pronounciation alters it though, due to the 'g' which in the original is a gamma sound, mostly like the w in 'why').

-A number of philosophers names, eg Parmenides, Zeno(n), Xenophanes, Anaximandros, Demokritos, Protagoras etc, basically most of the pre-socratics had cool names in my view..

-Deity names, eg Persephone, Artemis (Diana), Apollo(n)

A bit more hardcore (he was a Spartan captain, after all ;) ) : Amompharetos*.

Said to have talked down to the Spartan king Pausanias at Plataea, cause the king accepted the Athenian/other ally suggestion to move the Greek armies in the field due to the very tableaux-like terrain (Plataea means just that), and he argued that "No Spartan moves his position in front of a barbarian  ".

Amompharetos rules :)

* The etymology likely is from arete (virtue) and momphe (accusation) + steritic a, so it would mean that he cannot be accused of lacking in virtue (or in brute force either :) ).

I always thought Saul was really short but badass. David may be Ancient Israel's Chuck Norris, but Saul was the Terminator.

As to the Ancient Greek stuff, who could have missed Perikles?

I've always liked Nimrod. Great hunter! I've never understood why people equate it with being stupid nowadays.

I like the name Hattusilis (the Hittite capital), but when I try to think of evocative Mesopotamian names, all I can think of are the names for ancient caves in Vvardenfell.

I don't know, Sargon and Gilglamesh seem like pretty cool names

Mohenjo-Daro did always tickle my fancy.

And Tacitus is delightfully ironic.

Bartholomew (I prefer to spell it Bartholemew)

My cousin's name is Bart and my nickname for a while was Bort, so I really like this name. I think it's really old, might even be in the Bible. I think Old Testament? And even if it isn't ancient, it sounds pretty old, so I'm including it here.
