I think the best civ depends on the level you're playing at. At easier level, you can pick basically any one but I think that since you can get ahead easily in the science race, the babylonians are especially powerful.
On harder level, then you don't have much choice. A religious civ is a must because it is really difficult to get you people content. Scientific and expansionnist are useless since you can not really competition with the AI in the ancient time. You can buy and trade technologies and conquer city for expansion. Commercial civ would be nice if there was some real effect on corruption. From my point of view, get a hold on the Smith trading co is almost as useful as having a commercial civ.
What will really help is being militaristic or religious and that means that you should choose are the Aztec, Japanese, and egyptians. Three nice ciz. Egyptians can build massive city really quickly so you can get a early edge on productivity. They can also effectively clear jungle and their war chariot is upgradable to knight and cavalry so you're never really losing your offensives forces. However, you might have some difficulty getting leaders. Aztec's Jaguar warrior are my favourite unit bcs they are sooooo inexpensive and make good explorers. The drawback is that they are not really strong but here it is quantity that matters. The samurai is also pretty cool since it can easily defeat the knight's nightmare: the pikeman but it take some time before you get to that point. Eventhough a later golden age is good , your expansion can be delayed by few centuries.
