Best Civs

I think the best civ depends on the level you're playing at. At easier level, you can pick basically any one but I think that since you can get ahead easily in the science race, the babylonians are especially powerful.

On harder level, then you don't have much choice. A religious civ is a must because it is really difficult to get you people content. Scientific and expansionnist are useless since you can not really competition with the AI in the ancient time. You can buy and trade technologies and conquer city for expansion. Commercial civ would be nice if there was some real effect on corruption. From my point of view, get a hold on the Smith trading co is almost as useful as having a commercial civ.

What will really help is being militaristic or religious and that means that you should choose are the Aztec, Japanese, and egyptians. Three nice ciz. Egyptians can build massive city really quickly so you can get a early edge on productivity. They can also effectively clear jungle and their war chariot is upgradable to knight and cavalry so you're never really losing your offensives forces. However, you might have some difficulty getting leaders. Aztec's Jaguar warrior are my favourite unit bcs they are sooooo inexpensive and make good explorers. The drawback is that they are not really strong but here it is quantity that matters. The samurai is also pretty cool since it can easily defeat the knight's nightmare: the pikeman but it take some time before you get to that point. Eventhough a later golden age is good , your expansion can be delayed by few centuries.

righto :) But unfortunately there is no difference between War Elephant and Knight in attack and defence. Only good thing is... trampling elephants from every city... quite a sight :)

The only thing which disappointed me was the bad drawings of Mahatma Gandhi, it could have been better.
Yes. I stated in another posting that Gandhi shouldn't have been chosen as the ruler. Ashoka or even Nehru might be suitable.

I am surprised that no one has the Romans. To me they are the ultimate civ if you want to claim as much territory in the ancient times, especially if you want to conquer. Legionaries are fantastic both with attack and defense. That's the problem with immortals, as you may capture a city easily but defending it is the great problem. Legionaries defending can be the difference of losing a city and keeping it, as they do have the best defence until the pikeman with feudalism. As with Immortals and many ancient units, they really become effectively useless when either chivalry or gunpowder is invented by your enemy. That is however a very long time to conquer (and/or?) pillage!

If you haven't tried them they are a must, as there militaristic capabilites are a must for the ancient age.

At first I thought this was the case to, but the good thing about elephants compared to knights is that elephants don't need the resource horses, whereas knights do;) :egypt:

My favorite civ is INDIA.

Because of the Commercial Religious combination and their nice unit: War-elephant.

My second":

French: Commercial and industrious. (nice combination in my eyes.)

I never really used their special unit

The Babylonians are pretty good on mid-level difficulties too.
Religious trait is amazing. I can quickly build temples to eat up land with culture. And no turn anarchy is very nice too.
Scientific is kind of useful too. The cheaper libraries are nice but i really like the ability to get one extra advance each era. It helps me catching up in the Middle Ages.

Industrious is a good trait too. It really helps if your cities are in a bad spot beacuse you can quickly cut down those jungles.

Commercial, I really haven't tried that much. I played as the Greek and commercial helped a bit, but i wasn't conquering so the corruption wasn't a big deal.

Expansionist is also pretty good. You can quickly get some techs to catch up to the leaders.

If one were playing on a harder difficulty i reccomend the Iroquois. THey have a great UU, the best civ trait (religious), and the expansionist will help get some settlers and techs to catch up and then conquer your enemies with mounted warriors.

The other traits are good too. Really there's no bad civ. You can win with almost any of them. The deciding factor is what difficulty your playing and what UU the civ has.

Hurray for TennisGuy....

Im gonna experiment with some other civs soon th0. But currently persians are my favourite because their UU kicks ass well up until Knights. And are a good alternative actually especially if ur enemy likes pikemen. I like the sound of religous and industrious th0 so a civ like this is next 4 me. Can anyone tell me why the English arent Industrious. As any1 heard of the industrial revolution and where it started. I might just change them. Cheers Tennis Guy

"The Best Civ" is most relevant on higher levels. On the lowest level you can win 99% of the time.

If you play emperor or so and start up 100 games, which race is going to allow you the most victories? I guess that is a pretty good way to define "The Best Civ". Hmmmm... Of these 100 games, most of them will be decided in the EARLY stages of the game. As soon as you have taken the lead in territory and tech, it's about over as the AI can not launch any real good attack on you. That is: the AI only produces twice as much units as you do, and needs to produce 4 times as much, if you know what I mean.

In the early stages of the game, you need a good attacking unit that does not get lost if it loses a battle... So... Iroquis because of their unit. Religieus is the best thing to have too, and expansionist is great to get a second settler. It's all just about the opening phase, guys. The Persians and Aztecs would be good runner-ups.

Of course if you are going to make dozens of startups until you have a perfect one, this argument becomes less valid.

I really don't get why people fall in love with war elephants, samurais etc. Not that the civs are bad, but the units are about as good as a knight...
