Which COTM MAP is arguably the best one so far?

You have an even dozen to choose from. No escape hole - if you don't have a clear opinion, don't vote.

I was going to post some minimaps here as an aid to our memory, but then thought better of it. People go back and play old games, right? So if we don't post screen-shots this page may be a tip on what game to choose, without spoiling those same games! And it will save me some time.

Here is a link to the Game Details, starting with COTM01: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/games/index.php?month=30001

Wow, unanimously in favor of the Byzantine map so far. When I saw the bar was at 100%, my first assumption was that I was the only voter. Looks like that was not the case.

For me, and I haven't played that many Civ3 GOTMs yet (I've played more than I've submitted:D) The COTM12 map has so far been the best. I loved it. Renata said it played like a dream on monarch (I think)... Wouldn't know about that, as I always, and I mean always lose to the AI in Civ3 GOTMs, but that one was so excellent I had to submit before replaying. For trainings sake I often reload and see what I could have done in another way for a better outcome (I also love the Jason calculator - makes it possible to check your score even though you can't submit:)). But yes, I really liked COTM12's map. Maybe I should play the Byzantines COTM now... Probably good training!

--- edit:

I really need my morning coffee:sleep:, I was thinking about COTM 13 all the time:blush: but it wasn't on the poll so I just voted for the last one. Oh well, at least I broked the unanimous vote stream for COTM3 one might otherwise believe there's something fishy going on with the votes:p

cool thread Megalou. :goodjob:

I haven't played 4-7 so excluding those...Korea. Taking out the ability to use horses early on and fighting through mountains with trebuchets->artillary was pretty fun.

Maps where it becomes desireable to move your settler initially (C2 and C12) are kind of iffy, imo. 12 was my least favorite because of the super-weak AI.

I haven't played one I didn't like though, thanks to our excellent Gotm staff. :)

Could C13: France be added as an option?

I definitely favour COTM09 for being so out of the ordinairy.

@Megalou - Very good idea to make this poll :goodjob:
I seconded Redbad. COTM9 was very unusual and I enjoyed it the most.

I went for the Korean one. Punched well above its weight.

I only started COTM with the Mongolian game, but I'd be surprised to see a map that rivalled the intricacies of Korea any time soon.
It just had so much variety; archipelagos, islands within inland seas, ferryable straits, a continental island, and that cruel, cruel start location. Never has simply exploring the map been a cause for such turn-by-turn enjoyment.

Well I didn't play the first few so I can't comment on them, but since I've started playing I loved COTM08's map since there were no horses or iron nearby. This made it very difficult for my playing style, which was cool.

My second favorite was COTM09.

To bad you can't set up a poll option allowing us to vote for our top 3, giving them 5,3 and 1 points respectively.

Nice poll, by the way :)

Yep and yep. This poll can be used not only as advice on what maps to replay, but also as a clue to the map crafters about what people enjoys.

I'm glad you said that. I want to mention that the Mongolia map has no votes, but I really liked it...so, don't necessarily use this poll to show what people enjoy. :mischief:

Like a number of people, I have voted for the Vikings map because it was unusual. However I would not want to see every map like this! I like to be surprised once in a while and the Vikings one caught me out.

There are a number that I have really enjoyed for a variety of reasons and so if a map is not doing well in the polls (as MP pointed out for Mongolia) it doesn't mean that it was not a good map to play. I guess that we can't have 5 votes each? :mischief:

No, but I thought there would be more voters for more reliability.

There may be other factors too that skew the picture:

1) Recent games haven't faded as much as older ones.
2) Byzantines got the first 3 votes. Did this make people recall it more vivdly than the others? (I voted for it myself and I was only 2nd to vote.)
3) Did someone happen to do particularly well in the game he voted for? I'd never accuse anyone of this kind of voting, but being a born skeptic...
4) Some people haven't played all the games. Guilty as charged.

Just for the record, I find that I remember the games where I've underperformed and I often appreciate the games more when they are not a walkover. I certainly didn't do well in Renata's vikings game (the one I voted for). I lost count of the number of galleys that sunk in dangerous waters but it was a beautiful map and if I'd not been so short of time I would have done it more justice in my game performance.
