Hate to throw some cold water here, but the question is "best fighter for what?" You need some context. The mission, the conditions, the level of training of your pilots, all these will decide what will be the answer. A jet fighter is just a tool - a sophisticated tool, but a tool.
Example: In the 1950-53 Korean War, the Americans dominated the skies and they assumed it was because their "Shooting Stars" were superior machines. Then they got their hands for the first time on a MIG-15, sent it back to the U.S., took it apart, and flew it. They were amazed to learn that while the MIG was more primitive in terms of materials and manufacture, performance-wise it could out-climb the American jets and in some ways it was more maneuverable. It also could out-"sprint" the American jets, though a later Soviet pilot-defector strongly advised against going too fast; the plane came apart at the seams after a certain speed. Anyway, the stunned Americans finally figured out that the real reason they owned the Korean skies was because the Chinese pilots were badly trained and didn't even have a formalized command-language, so communications between pilots and the ground were cumbersome and time-consumming - a fatal flaw in air combat.
Point: The tool is only as good as the user. This is why the AK-47 series assault rifles are so widespread in the world. Even though there are many far more accurate and better-built weapons in the world (FAL, M-16a, etc.), the AK-47 is simple and needs little maintenance. Look at the people using it - largely illiterate rebels who have little idea how to clean weapons or aim them well. The AK-47 lays down a field of fire and will still fire when kicked around in the dirt. Same with any weapons.
Moral: Tell me what the mission is and who's flying it, and I'll tell you what planes I need!
