I've just been looking for something on this but couldn't find anything - however, I'm sure it will have been discussed before. Please will one of you kind peeps send me a link or point me in the right direction?

Last night I started a new game and thought I'd try Attila, given that there had been a few posts on him. Having no better ideas I chose pangea - ended up settling in the middle of biggest forest you ever saw! Decided to reroll that one after a while...hence question.

Any conquest civ --> pangea or other 1-landmass type maps (like great plains).
Any civ with sea traits might have advantages on maps with more than 1 landmass. To name one in particular: Polynesia on archipelago/small continents.

There isn't really more I guess... oh... maybe Carthage for Highlands due to mountain crossing.
And yeah, obviously their whole free harbor trait is useless on great plains or other maps without any/much water.

It's all pretty obvious, isn't it?
A civ has a forest bonus from their UA/UB/UU?
Then they'll be good on a Arborea map.
Jungle traits? Rainforest.
...

In spite of their ability to cross mountains Carthage is better off starting in maps with small-medium islands, there they can just use their UA to connect cities and never build a road.

For Attila if you want to tweak your options for an ideal map then go pangea 5 billion years and arid.

The slowest the development of other civs the longer your early supremacy will last. Arid will make less forests to appear and 5 billion years will lower the amount of hills.

That being said you can still be unlucky and find yourself in unfavorable conditions.

Anyone wanting to play peaceful builder as any civ:

Large islands, preferably with legendary start.

Carthago wants lots of islands, or at least coast. No need for a road, all your cities are connected by the free harbor. The mountain trait is not that important

To answer a question with a question - is there a map setting that reduces the amount of hills and mountains? If so, this would be optimum for any domination-oriented civ, particularly those that utilize mounted units like Mongolia, Arabia, and maybe Greece... who knows, if such a map generation exists, there may even be reasonable for Egypt to build war chariots.
And the inverse of this map characteristic for the Inca.

Earth age 3 billion years = more hills
Earth age 5 billion years = less hills .
