What is in your mind the best random event? It can be anything you deem your favorite, whether it's a cool quest or an instant bonus to you, or even a horde of barbarians to wipe out your enemies.

Personally I think the best one is either the herbalists one, where you can reject testing on your people and gain temporary happiness, or run tests, get some unhappys and gain 2 extra health the entire game. It's really awesome and is an ancient era one, so you get maximum benefit from it every time.

I also LOVE the economics one that reduces inflation, something about our economists have come up with a new model. It cuts inflation by a lot, can save you easily 100gpt in some games.

The corporate greed quests are pretty cool too, but I don't usually have corporations anymore.

One time the game threw the "Master Blacksmith" quest at me (or whatever it's called where you make x number of Forges). I make Forges in almost all my cities anyway. The map size I was playing called for 7; just so happened the island I was on had room for 7 cities. Six of them already had Forges, the seventh was about five turns away. Free Settled GE in my :hammers: city, for doing exactly what I was gonna do anyway. :D:w00t:

I like the one one that says something like "the last hereditary heirs to the throne have died out" and you get a choice of having Great Free Military Instructor, Great Merchant Specialist, or Great Prophet Specialist in your city.

Slave revolt in Pericles' capital right when my stack of 10 HA was just outside. The slaves probably considered me as their liberator.

Once, in the newsfeed about things going on in other civs, there was a message about how "the President of America faces impeachment" that was pretty awesome even though I have no idea what was going on.

Another really cool one involves espionage, it's something about how a famous enemy spy has been caught and you can either return him, torture him for information or try to convert him into a double agent, don't remember all the details but it was worded really well.

Damn, these things really bring flavor into the game and make the world feel alive.

Yes, I like those where you are at war, and I get an event that says the rival civ decided to take care of my wounded soldiers and returned them home. It was worded well and I decided to make peace.

But my favorite is anything involving extra production.

I think the one Haig is talking about, allows you to sabotage something like 5 improvements of an AI. That one always slows them down. Great when it's on someone that you wanted to declare war on anyway. So, you are not too badly by the negative relations given.

The handy ones, like the one that grant all of your axemen, or swordsmen I forget which, gain the Shock promotion. It worked out perfectly when I was playing the Americans, and had no early UU or UB to benefit from.

I did get the "Your Archers are the best in the world" quest, where they all archery type units gain Combat1 for free.
I actually tried to use more Longbows and Crossbowmen offensively that game.
I figured I wouldn't do it normally, so, why not try it now?

Lately though, I have been leaving Events turned off.
I kept getting that annoying tornado event that wipes out your barracks just after I finished building it.
It destroyed the whole point of playing an AGG leader and the early rush. It hurt my War Chariot rush too once.
I got tired of the losses, and when there were benefits, well, there are more AIs than me, so, it just benefits my opponents more than me. No point to make the game even more harder on myself, than I want it.

The Chariot Event is good. Got it once, promptly forgot about it. Chariot rushed Monty, who was east of me, but too close. During the rush, and specifically just before my chariots hit his capital, the event triggered. IIRC, it was SIX free chariots in the capital tile. Came in real handy. I renamed all his cities to something more "German" because Nahuatl is such strange stuff.

The "people-of-city-X-build-a-pasture-complete-with-a-road" Event is good too, especially if you can score it very, very early.

Extra hammers to coal plants is delicious. IIRC it's +4 raw hammers, but with all the modifiers (factory+ coal plant, duh and probably a forge) it ends up being +8 hammers!

There are so many broken ones it's hard to pick. All gunpowder gets march...all of a kind of melee get cover...insta-golden age while at war...diplo events that give you the + needed to win...the one that gives you a bunch of tanks and pretends the AI declared on you...etc etc.

Of course, none of that has any place in the game.

Hey man, events are for flavour, most people spend days on a single game and get emotionally invested. If a bad event happens, they just reload. If a good event happens, well, not everyone can win immortal domination even after getting boxed in by Tokugawa.

The point is you shouldn't have to reload just because of a stupid broken event.

I once got the mine collapse one 3 times on the same mine, in less then 4 turns after I rebuild it.Where the hell is the improve mine quality option in the game?

I probably dont have any favorite, since I played with them off pretty much from the start and every time I turn them on to have some extra fun, I quickly get the stupid ones after eachother and it reminds me why I hate them.

The free cover one for the melee units is pretty fun though.

I love random events. i dont always like the outcome.

if i feel that my game is lost due to a single event such as barbarian uprising i just go back a few saves.

unless your playing competativly i think random events add more to the game then they take away.

my personal favorite is probably when city ruins provide science bonus.

they are not overpowered but for some reason i fing them fun. if i have a city ruin near my city I leave it undeveloped as long as possible in hopes of getting it to trigger an event.

i have to say i am also a fan of the diplomatic random events.

they throw a little spice into an otherwise predictable diplomatic game. when another civ suddenly sees you in a new light be it possitive or negative its fun to deal with the change.

The diplo events are pretty well done, except maybe they could be better.
Don't all the diplo events provide +1/-1.If its not in the game (dont think i ever got one) it could be fun if there are bigger events, that provide +2/-2 for bigger events (maybe a wikileaks event :P ) or even +3/-3 but only later in the game (maybe 3 diplo modifier one would have to be a mission type thing).

The way the diplo events are now are good, they may hurt or help you, but it wont make a pleased civ instantly want to declare on you or a pissed off civ instantly become your best friend.

I love the drydock bonus, +1 health and +2 hammers.

The one where you run police state for a long time and you get to choose between something like +2 happiness in all cities or march on all gunpowder units.

+1 gold from all courthouses is also very good.

The Marathon Runner golden age is very nice, as is The Federal Reserve.

all melee get cover while playing as Rome on earth18.
