Yeah, those early, let's say... dubious city placements tend to be an endless source of amusement. :D

That said, this here would be a good illustration of one mild cricism we could level at Sullla: he correctly identified that Shaka was screwed hard by the map... and yet he went ahead with that map selection anyway! :rolleyes:
(And if you have a look at my results for that map, boy, was that unfair indeed for Shaka! :pat:)

Now, having experimented with map selection as well on my end, I know firsthand that simply getting a map which looks fair (forget about actually being fair) is an exercise in frustration... and Season 5's climate selection certainly didn't help in that regard either.
 
BTW, in the Discord we have been having a discussion about future seeding for future tournaments. The general consensus (including by Sullla himself) is that there should be some higher weight given to more recent seasons, particularly the post-AP and Deity starting tech removal ones (i.e. S5 and on). Some (myself included) think we should only score from S5 and on for future seeding (fun fact this would make HC a pool 2 leader), others think we should have S1-4 be half-weighted while S5-8 is given full weight. A select few (like myself) even think that something should be done to reward good performance in the most recent tournament - my idea is to make the top 2 in the previous season automatically pool 1 in the next. Thoughts?
 
How about using my results instead? :p
And if you want to keep it semi-self-contained (understandable), how about using the AH results instead?

In all honesty, AI Survivor sample set is too small and too random (outlier results agalore, especially in the last two seasons) for seeding to be meaningful.
So (apart from using results from a larger sample), the options I would suggest are:
  • Drop seeding altogether: the idea was to prevent "groups of death" or "groups of weaklings", but current AI Survivor rankings don't allow for that. If it doesn't work, just drop it.
  • Simple previous-tournament-only-results seeding: winners of the opening round games get seeded for the next tournament (8 seeds only).
  • Don't use PWR for seeding purposes, base it on a score measuring tournament results only: something simple like 1 pt for reaching the playoffs / 3 pts for reaching the Championship / 7 pts for winning the championship ?
  • Popularity contest : have people vote for the seeds before the tournament.
