Well, of those 3, Military Tradition is the key tech for me. IMO the best tech in the game is Currency.

Hunting is obviously the #1 military tech.

Starting with a scout instead of a warrior is OVER-POWERED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hunting is so strong, it's like.... broken!

I kind of like Literature. It's dirt cheap, and it opens up GL which is one of my favorite wonders to build. Plus it allows you to build NE which will ramp up your GP production.

Alphabet is very strong if you're in contact with multiple other civs. Also, if like me you build the great wall a lot, you usually have a great spy which means you need alphabet to build spies so you ca start stealing techs.

There are two possible answers to this question: 1) Liberalism, and 2) ignorant, incorrect answers.

Currency or Code of Laws. These let you get your economy back in order after rexing.

I gotta agree with the posts above. I would probably say:

1. Literature.
2. Liberalism.
3. Code of Laws

(with Currency just barely missing out).

I love Liberalism for Free Speech and a shot at a free tech, but I just can't say no to the Great Library and National Epic, along with the HE if you're a warmonger

The fact that "Other" now accounts for 2/3rds of all votes should clue you in to the fact that the poll options suck.

Liberalism 1st. Currency 2nd.

Bronze working. It enables the crucial 'Horde of Axemen' wonder, plus slavery, and chopping. Even if you don't want or cant get the HoA chopping (and whipping) can make or break the early game.

Close second is currency, its cash bonus is instant, and if your diplo is decent and you have sailing+coasts or rivers and more raw commerce per turn than courthouses would save you for 0 hammers. It's second due to coming later, you need bronze working to expand to the point that you need currency.

Alphabet has a shot at third, but that depends on how big and how hard the game is, and the diplo situation.

I could see a a case for hunting. Lit is also a pretty nice little tech that happens early enough to matter.

CoL, pah, there are other founding techs if you want a religion, and a tech can't really be the best just because people like to play ORG. Courthouses are decent builds, but always secondary to actual development until corporations come into play.

I doubt liberalism makes or breaks many games, even on higher levels. You're lot in the world is gelled quite a bit by then. It helps a winning game win better, and might salvage a few losing games, but probably not many.

As for the ones actually on the list, you can safely ignore them until they're prerequisites to things you actually want.

Then why does everyone beeline it as soon as they get Currency?

Not everybody does.

It's trade bait (taking advantage of an overpowered mechanic) in single player, but dangerous to pursue on a beeline against reasonably competent people.

Multiplayer in turn-based games is a joke anyway.

Something tells me you are bored with either the game or the community, based on your latest posts.

It's all about the Civics. Caste System + PHI can give you a significant advantage in some cases (though some would debate if it's worth giving up Slavery for). And Free Speech is Free Speech. Essential for CVs

Like TMIT said, the whole path between currency and liberalism have high trading value. The Liberalism rush strategy is good not just because of Lib itself, but because the whole path down the line offers nice things with high trade value bulbable by a specific, easy to aquire early game, specialist.

It multiplies the power of the bulbs, and that's very powerful.

Miles,
You're right, I shouldn't have overlooked caste system. I guess I don't generally think about it till you can get pacifism or the national epic. Caste system is quite powerful in some setups.

I still maintain that bronze working is more ubiquitous in that all traits and strategies generally need either axes or chopping or slavery. Even agriculture isn't necessarily that important early game, seafood starts, grassland heavy starts, or pasture starts may not need it very soon, if at all. Seafood starts might have less forests, but they generally need slavery whipping more due to production concerns.
