Best unit EVER?

Fixed. Kandros is ridiculous. That his default civ can't get mages or archmages is what gimps him with restrictions on, but even then he's really, really strong.

Just out of interest, what makes Kandros so strong?

I think the main thing is financial. Many people over-estimate the importance of financial, but here is what I use him for (balseraph): mutated scouts + arena x2 + ingenuity (1/2 price upgrade) = mutated, 9-10xp, harlequins, assassins, druids (from harlequins) and eventually beastmasters. Major importance: he is neutral (for druids without align change). Financial + ingenuity is a very strong combo, if you have many upgrade options. He also has aggressive, but since I use him on the recon line it is a waste. The only civ I find that he drastically upgrades is balseraph (and perhaps grigori) although he mildly improves almost any civ that is not tier 1 already.

I remember back in like version 23, I had a Meshabber of Dis get up to around level 32. That was an interesting game, considering I defeated about 75% of my opponents with just one warrior. I think I was still playing settler or chieftain back then, though. :(.

Best unit? My first thought was orkisch adapts, because you get an buy one get two deal to set the world on fire. :)
And with ragnarok you change the world.
But goblins are faster....and can be wolfriders.

Overlord Speakers. They're just plain awesome really. Get them up to combat 5 while they're still cultists, then upgrade them and you have a strength 16 unit that can cast tsunami with +25% damage and summon strength 19.5 krakens. The best thing to do is to find a conveniant inland lake in your enemies lands and cast tsunami with a load of Speakers and Cultists, backed up by the occasional waterwalking stygian guard. If you promote your cultist/speakers with movement 1 as well you can use them to cast tsunami, attack enemy units and then get back to the safety of the lake, all in one turn.

fireball casting units (golems, amurites, arcane barges etc.) eat waterwalking units for breakfast though. That, and you need that inland lake right next to a city for this to go up to it's fullest potential. A very nice strat, but not as gamebreaking as some other strats out there.

You can also use coasts to cast it though, all your neighbour's rich coastal cities are open for the taking, most ships wont be able to defeat your Speakers and in SP its unlikely that the AI is going to think of using Firethrowing Golems, (never seen the AI even make one). Besides, that counter would only be available if the target player was the luchuip. Anyway, tsunami can also be used out in the open to destroy improvements and do serious damage to units outside of cities. A good extra to this strategy would be a waterwalking Hemah casting air elemental. I never tried this in my game (as lanun), but air elemenals spawning lightning elementals should be able to finish up a lot of damaged units. I'm going to try a new, similiar game a.s.a.p to test this strat properly.

The strategy should work with any OO civ although the Lanun have the most to gain (better use of coastal cities) then most other civs. Falamar would be better for getting Speakers quicker. A civ with the Spiritual trait would be good too as most of your army is made up of disciple units. Unfortunately the only one wo comes to mind atm is Os-Gabella, who has much better synergies with AV.

Nice, Kol.7, I'd like to see a write-up of that strat in its own thread. Sylvnn runs an OO strat too and you guys could compare notes.

Oh that's interesting, I'll have to talk to him about it sometime. Has he done a strategy guide himself? If not I will write one up when I'm not to busy, probably in a week or two. But anyway, to get back on-topic, yeah Speakers are the best unit IMO.
