Best way to Civ4 online?

Hello guys,

someone might remember me from the past cause I haven't been a while here
I have no multiplayer experiences at all so what is the best way to play civ4 online with other people nowadays? Is it free? Do I meet too challengin players or players who are same level as me (I'm very noob) ?

Oh I can see that this whole CIV forum has a lot of members! The number of members speaking in the forum is the biggest I have seen in comparison with other game forums!

It is free. I don't know a whole lot about it either, but you need a GameSpy account to play online. Most people like to play Pangaea maps and have a turn timer set to blazing speed. Most games are either password protected or full, so it can be hard to find a game you want. It is possible to play by email, but whenever I try, it confuses me.

There is also PBEM option -- it is quite fun and lets to play at your pace, not Timer's...

If you have friends that play you can play by direct ip connection as well.
