I got rid of Berlin there, but Munich survived, it has nothing and i'm gonna raze it. But there is a continous ****ing ARMY of axeman and archers coming at Munich.

They are coming from 2 different directions, about 5+ axemen and archers (mainly axemen) are coming from each direction. This is happening every couple of turns.

How can I avoid this?

the best way to stop barbarians is to disable the function through a custom game option. Otherwise, the great wall and large culture borders help. I hate barbarians. I cant remember the last time I played with them enabled.

First of all, can I see a save? I enjoy trying to escape such situations, no matter what it is.
Secondly, you can avoid it by exploring, and when you see a barbarian city build a stack of axes or swords and chariots or horse archers to attack it. I am guessing the stacks are coming from 2 barb cities that have high production capabilities.
To stop the invasions temporarily, build archers, axes, and mounted units ASAP to wipe them out and defend your cities.
When all else fails and if you really love your starting position, just World Builder them out :D

EDIT: If you despise barbarians, turn them off with an option before starting a Custom Game. Another way to stop them in Beyond the Sword (and Warlords?) is to build the Great Wall.

Barbarians only spawn in places where there isn't a unit within 2 squares, so by spreading your guys all over the place you get rid of places where they can come from.

Sometimes if you kill a neighbor you get more barbarians because the AI helps you spawnbust.

Failing this, get copper, plant guys on the outskirts of your cities on hills, and unlock the heroic epic because they'll give you lots of experience. Archery is your last resort... don't just huddle in your cities. Meet them on the outskirts so they don't go around pillaging you.

That's what happened. That explains a lot. Just build up your military (mounted and axes), and then send them off into he wild around your land.

Can I have the save, by the way? I love barb-killing :D

Leatha - I recommend placing a shortcut to your BTS folder on your desktop or a favorite in Win Explorer to easily access it. From there you have access to several shortcuts to all kinds of stuff - saves, screenshots, conf, mods, custom assets, etc. etc. Simply as cake once you do it. If you play Civ a lot and come to these forums you will be accessing it frequently

The peaceful Baldor route to Heroic Epic.

Build one swordman, and use it to attack barbarians as they leave their strongholds.
You’ll reach ten ex.point in no time, but keep up your efforts, eventually you’ll be rewarded with At the sword and four Friendly Local events.

I generally build a few chariots to keep near my border for this reason. I love the free xp.

Though recently I've been playing a lot more quick/18 civ/normal size, so you don't see all that many barbarians. XD I enjoy the quick games because you can actually reach the end and then have a score to compare to your previous games instead of getting half way through and going MEH this is boring.

Why would one take a Swordsman to attack Barb-Axes?

This swordman should be well taken care of, he’s out there to get injured, not killed.
The events you’re after, to unlock a peaceful Heroic Epic, can only accur if your swordman is wounded.

Use other units to attack axemen, or let these guys attack fortified archers on nearby hill/forest tiles.

It’s not very difficult to get four Friendly Local events, especially if you already have most of the events up to this point in the game.

It seems to me like barbs can smell unprotected resources and under-protected cities.

ie, if I leave a copper mine unprotected, seems like barbs both spawn close to it and head toward it with purpose. As soon as I park an axe on it, its like barbs don't even bother anymore.

Same goes, it seems as soon as I build a sizeable army the barbs largely just stop altogether. Perhaps its just AI doing more spawnbusting and the lack of open areas for barbs to spawn...?

I've started playing more often against large numbers of AI (usually 11 opponents). This allows me normally to ignore barbarians. Early on in the game I'll get a notification here and there that some AI was taken by barbs. Then later on, it switches, and I get a few notifications that barbs cities have been taken by AI civs. I usually only worry about taking barbs cities if they build near me. Often the barbs will build cities on peninsulas that are out of my borders, but my borders block any AI civs from getting there. Then I just build the Great Wall and block them in, and kill the cities at a time when it's advantageous for me to gain another city. Or I raze it in revenge if they gave me issues earlier.

I like fighting barbarians. They can be a challenge, but they are also a way to level up your troops, especially if you aren't warring early. I good bit of barb busting can help you get to level 4 and build West Point if you aren't a warmonger.

The whole point of barbarians is to give your units XP. (So if you don´t like free XP, disable them, yeah.) :mischief:

The whole point of Barbs is to cause you Unit Maintenance. So if you want to pay for something you don't have to, enable them :p
