Best Wonder

I wouldn't call it "tying up" the cities; if you are doing your Trade right you should have a pile of caravans here and there, primarily commodity but also food. ...

That's what makes it so dumb. I've always had the freight around to deliver, but I never did the math because, back in the days that I valued King Richard's Crusade to turn out the food caravans, I just got into the habit of using the food freight as well. :blush:

Actually, if one accepts the definition of Power Democracy as the ability to "full" rush build a commodity freight for 235g one turn, and deliver it the next turn for, say, 1250g; it would take two freight deliveries to buy the Wonder outright. (Full rush build Temple to "seed" the production box; switch to 600 shield Wonder and rush build = 2480g.) By comparison, if you go the food freight route to a Wonder, you're tying up the production of twelve cities when instead you could produce "replacement" commodity freight for in two or three cities, and rush build other useful things in the remaining nine.
I have yet to see a 1000+ dillivery during the prime wonder building era, how do you do it? That is unless you cut sci, and count the beakers as extra gold because of the money you bring in with reduced sci, or something...

High bonus payments in late game usually depend on:
- Valuable, demanded commodities (usually Oil, or Silk/Spice/Gems/Gold);
- Long distance delivery to demanding AI city (via ship chain/RR);
- Large cities (size 15-30) with high numbers of trade arrows;
- Key improvements (SuperHighways and Airports).
It also helps to STOP tech-gifting your KeyCiv, as that increases the "cap" on how high an individual delivery bonus can run.

I don't think A.I. was referring to the "prime wonder building" timescale (which I would consider between Copernicus and Newton), rather to the later timescale when the 600-shield wonders are being sought.

Agreed. Hence the comment "you're tying up the production of twelve cities" i.e., building 12 freights.

Hoover Dam is a very good wonder, but certainly not the best. Bach is certainly better, so is mikes and also Marco. There are certainly worse wonders, such as the oracle (if it only costed 200 it would be well worth it [early republic], but 300 can be put elsewhere).

My favourtite wonders (in no order):
Mike
L's workshop
Marco
Great Library
Sun Tzu
Adam Smith
Magellan

:egypt: PYRAMIDS, PYRAMIDS, PYRAMIDS.
With the Pyramids one can grow to such a size that opponents can simply be overwhelmed.
Second is the L's Workshop.

Pyramids come to early to be good. In the early game, to much growth is a bad thing, and the 200 shields can be put to another wonder of greater value. Add to that the fact that the a.i. loves to get it and it becomes almost impossible to build without going without some much better wonders. There is also the point that masonry is a tech that should be delayed for some time, so it could put a drag on your reserch. If pyramids came a little later, when growth is good, it could be usefull in order to speed up growth to size 3 for WLTCD.

Leo's, In my gameplay it arrives at just the right time to fend off those annoying attacks from other civs, and let you concentrate on building rather than rep[lacing lost units.

Pyramids are a great way to distract the AI when in a tight Wonder race for something crucial like Colossus or Copernicus.

Leo is great, you don't need to constantly replace out-dated units in your cities' defences, so you can build improvements or more units to use on the offensive.

collossus.

i re-home almost all my caravans in that city so that they produce huge trade bonuses which makes everything else trivial afterward. dont get me wrong. there are a lot of wonders i like. second place is hanging gardens. third is lighthouse if i play on a world map or any map with a lot of water. reason for lighthouse is to get my caravans across the ocean quickly. when trade starts flowing in i go for most of the wonders that are popular like michaelangelos et al.

I don't really like light-house much, as the benefit from it is limitted as by the time I've built it I usually only have a few dozen turns until I get caravels.

I actually don't do any research after musketeers, I steal, plunder or swap with the AI, so I'm nearly always the most advanced, even though I have 0% science. As a result I don't need sccience wonders.
