Beta Gauntlet VI

END OF GAUNTLET DEADLINE IS APPROACHING.

Heres a tip for people: if you choose a balanced map, with 18 civs, you get boatloads of resources on the pangaea. Lots of resources clustered together on the boundaries between each civ's capital city zone, so with supreme culture you should be able to easily claim them all.
Also arid maps give greater chance of floodplains but I'm most people have worked that out.
I don't have time to play myself but the above is what I'd do.

Very good one, Grayfish! Congrats!:goodjob: Space Launch at 1289 AD is excellent!

What time zone are you going with? I'm thinking of giving it another try tonight, but that may be too late.

I don't believe he's saying he launched in 1289 AD, but rather that was what the game was called. Especially since in a normal game I don't believe there is even a year 1289 AD. Granted, I am still a little confused on his post as to what year he launched.

Edit: I definitely plan on trying out his permanent alliance idea. Sounds interesting.

The active participants know what they're doing.

There's no set timezone right now, but if you can get us a submission in 24 hours from this post time, it's got a chance of making the update.

Correct. 1289 is the HOF entry # for his game, not the launch date.

Oh and Crayfish, welcome to CFC! You started off with the best forum. :D

Thanks for clearing that up.:)

I will submit one iff (if and only if) I can get space launch around 1650 AD. It has less than 0.00000000000000001% chance in my favor.;)

I know what you mean. It's just slightly less realistic than tackling C3C Sid Huge.

I'm sorry, because I have RL committments that negate me playing an OCC every few days, I don't get to have any input in this thread? Nice welcoming forum you run here...
I've been reading all the gauntlets here since the beginning, and in this one read how players could have got faster times with aluminium, this method gives a much much greater chance of having that (and everything else :D ) within your cultural boundaries.
Overloading a balanced map with AIs to get bulk resources is not something I've seen discussed anywhere, so I thought I'd share the idea, take it or leave it.

Aluminum is largely irrelevant. My game is structured so that I don't even get Industrialism until I'm ready to go for Robotics.

What, you mean, like, you won't extend the deadline of the most interesting Gauntlet so far for us to learn, although we just have been treated to GalCiv2, have R/L jobs, a girl, and everything!

:( :( :( :(

J/K

OK, that was one gauntlet where even I could relate to the strats of the experts (hey, 1660 is absolutely GREAT). I hope to see more of that. A big :goodjob: to you.

Regards.

Everyone's input is welcome in this forum. The Hall of Fame is designed to be as educational as it is entertaining. You freely posted your opinion.

I too posted my personal opinion, and what I meant was that being at the tale end of an active competition, the players have already sculpted successful strategies.

I will admit my comment could have been much better phrased. And if you interpreted the remark as me being a condescending moderator, that was not my intention and I absolutely apologize.:(

It's nice to now our work is appreciated. I hope our misunderstanding today doesn't drive you away.

Meh. My last attempt didn't break 1700AD. Somehow, I doubt WastinTime was so unfortunate. I'm guessing that I'm conceding defeat here.

I had one really, really good game.

1) Academy in 2560BC
2) Great Library in 2120BC
3) Oxford in 1000BC
4) Constitution in 750BC
5) 580 Beakers/Turn in 1AD

I was really fustrated when this one only clocked in at 1680AD. I went back to a 1300AD save and re-played it and managed 1650AD, but of course that's inadmissable. I had just flubbed the endgame badly.

Throughout my attempts, I found that half the time I had no idea why things were going so well, or why things were totally falling apart. There's a extremely delicate balance throughout this entire Gauntlet, and I don't have its coordinates throughly mapped yet, dozens and dozens of games later.

What a crazy last run. I wanted to try a few new things. I used Mansa Musa to play around with spiritual's ability to change civics. I also tried 18 opponents. Thanks friskymike, I was not aware of the dense resources with this many players. I can hardly believe I got 1650 AD with this. Not sure how much of it was Mansa's trait, or if it was just because I had Aluminum and copper for the first time. I have to give some credit to the starting position. I had 8 (eight) gems tiles in my boundries. 3 were workable. 2 corn. 1 Dye if that matters.

If only I had done it with Liz. Too bad you can't run through the same map with a different leader.

I'll go thru some of the other high points tomorrow...sleep now.

I did two games last night, but couldn't break 1700 AD. However, I have learned new trick last night and also found a bug. Basically, the bug is as follows:

1. Start a new game and meet someone one at 4000BC.
2. Don't like the map, so hit "Regenerate" for new map
3. Now at 4000BC, I would still have contact with the civ I already meet in the previous game. I hope Firaxis fix this bug soon because it's very anoying.

Now, comes a cool trick. Since I start the game with 18 other civs, my starting warrior often show up right next to the starting settler of another civ. Of course, I would immediately attack and get a free worker right at 4000BC.;) The tech race was also unbelievable! I went directly for Alphabet first and by the time I got Alphabet, I was able to trade for almost at least 7 other techs (including Metal Casting, Iron Working). I guess the AIs must have learned them from the huts. Even after the initial trade, the AIs were constantly come up with technology to trade with me. In fact, I under-estimated how fast they were and missed out on the Oracle and Liberalism.:(

Thanks "friskymike"!:) Your idea works! 18 civs is the key for a lot of resources, fast tech pace, free worker (and more free workers by eliminating the nearest neighbors; at least, I save time by not having to build any of my workers). Although, I didn't break 1700AD, it was my best run ever.

The Gauntlet is concluded. The winner is WastinTime, followed by Blue Renner and crunch.
