Beta Gauntlet VI

I can't seem to stop playing this one.

Same here. I'll get fired soon.

Just finished a 1830 I'm pretty proud of. The finishing date is nothing to shout about but I built just one worker and didn't chop any trees - there just weren't any.

Yeah, this is a really fun gauntlet. The games are so short that you can just pop 'em one after another.

I think I'm going to have to sit out the next one, though... I'm just investing way too much time in this, and will need a break.

hey syn,
how to get both clock and time (and a turn number!) in the top right corner? I want that too.

1700 finish, with an absolutely perfect starting position.
In the NE, Great Plains. Stone, 3 fur, 3 corn, pig, iron and coal popped in the city radius. Plenty of rivers. The only missing ingredients are marble, copper, aluminum. 2700 for specialists. I did Elizabeth, Khans plus Washington. I don't think it'll count - is there a point to submitting it, given a better finish? Also, I could post the save - I'm curious if anyone could do better with this position.

@crunch

Yep, am using HOF mod. But you could also use some standalone mod component, there are a couple in these forums.

@ohioastronomy
Please post your orig save, would love to try that goody out. I could regen 1000 times and still not get smth like that.

I'd like that, but I think they haven't fixed the bug with loading saves when you don't have NTFS. I'm not changing my disk file system for this game.

Though the HOF mod is the only option if you're planning to play a HOF game...

@ohioastronomy, WastinTime, and those who had finished around 1700 AD or better, I hope to see a screen shot of your starting position. Thanks!

Yes, it's a fun gauntlet. Still, it takes about three hours per game. 2.5 hours to play and 30 minutes to generate map.

Alright. I managed a 1660AD win.

I can't believe there's nothing I could have done to shave a single turn off. It was an exciting game, though. I got jumped by Kublai Khan and had to fight off an invasion. Luckily, my Grenadier appeared to be invincible.

Welcome to the forums, Crayfish!

Nice move, getting permanent alliance. Have tried it too but didn't work out.
What year did you finish?

Hey Syn,

I'm just a noob (in comparison) and can't finish much before 1950 (ever). I obviously need to practice up my game. But, I do like to strategize and disect the game.. thinking about it from different angles all the time. Like this last game 1289, I learned more about how to get the computer permament ally to "do things" for you. Such as, if you watch how they pick their techs, and what they build, you can start to see the underlying algorithms at play. So you sometimes have to waste a turn or two researching their tech so that you get to pick the next tech. And, its much easier to research when you have 4 extra cities at your disposal. :)

Huh. Now that's an interesting idea. I've never done a thing with Permanent Alliances.

How do these things work?

Some notes on getting an earlier finish:

The difference between 1800ish and 1700ish finishes, at least for me, is primarily in the treatment of the midgame and endgame. Early games have a pretty obvious set of needed builds: granary, library, early academy at the start. University/Oxford, of course, National Epic, and Globe are also important (with the big food starts this is key). You also get the optimal civics (representation/pyramids, bureacracy/oracle, caste system, pacifism, usually with an OR interlude, environmentalism). Health buildings are nice, and the Great Library/Hanging Garden are useful if not essential.

Once you get past the opening, however, you have a long lull where there isn't a lot to produce. I accelerated my finishes by switching mines to windmills or abandoning them in favor of specialists. I also gained by pruning my tech choices, not going for anything that isn't on the critical path (e.g. no divine right, military tradition, democracy/comm/fasc). For cities with tons of food, slamming through chemistry/scientific method to medicine as quickly as possible also pays a nice yield. You can shave turns at the end by juggling commerce and production; once you get past electricity switching all eligible towns to watermills is a good idea. If you're heavier on hammers than beakers, go for computer before apollo; if not, go for apollo first.

Perm. Alliances are very strange. I think you combine a lot of things like beakers, for example, but it takes more to research something. Projects, are worked together. I hope we get a chance to explore these more. Not sure how'd you'd work them into a gauntlet.

As a noob, I didn't think it was even possible to win the Gauntlet without a permanent alliance. :P I mean: one city? You've got to be kidding me. I guess I am not into the regen-thing just yet. :)

On that note, can anyone recommend to me a good strategy guide/web site? Not that I am trying to leech off your knowledge or anything but there's no point in me having to re-invent what is considered basic knowledge. I'd rather learn-up on "known knowledge" and then build new strategem from there.

Thanks!

Ahh.. never mind. I see that there's whole forums here dedicated to strategy. Did anyone find any of these particularily useful? Thanks.
