Beta UHV discussion

For the 30% Islam UHV, you don't necessarily have to conquer. You can also spread Islam to foreign cities.

(However, the easiest way for the Human player is indeed conquering.)

I've personally found that converting Lithuania and giving them lots of units work rather well, they kind of destroy everything in their way

I just finished the arabs on the second dif level and the 25% islam was ok. 1425 was my finishing-year.

I had to bend over for the european countrys quite a lot, till france offered me open borders, that way I got the remaining cotys I needed.

Conquest was no option for stability reasons. Everything was fine but expansion. Even though I stayed on the historical territory it realy hurt me. Should I have given away the african citys after uhv#2?

build tight cities in Egypt ... it got to much food as it is, and the extra Stability (from settling in Solid, and building) should carry you some way

Be quick with buildings like Manor Houses, Courthouses and Castles. Prepare to build the Hanseatic League quickly after you discover the needed tech and your cities grow almost instantly. Imperialism can be a nice addition too. But the most important thing, never forget your economy.

Did we reach any conclusions on the Arabic UHVs?

And by the way, French UHV 1 is doable but it is really tight!

Use your initial free wins against barbarians to get a couple of upgraded soldiers by attacking at really hard odds.

we had a debate on the french UHV some time ago, and i believe we ended up with the argeement that it indeed was to tightly fitted, but that it might be fixed by adding some captureable workers in the area

I used the wins to get the two barb citys in the southwest with 2 archers :)
I settled near augsburg to make it flip
I waited for the plague to kill the defenders in the indy citys to the south and conquered them 'for free'
still it was never enough. I didnt come up with any better plan, allways needed like 10 turns extra

Found capital at Dijon. Use your axeman to attack and take Bordeux. Build Chateux and then only focus on military while the cities grow. Found the last few cities in germany just before the UHV goal date. Try to mess up city placements in germany since they will flip anyway. Try to get mounted sergeants.

If you take Bordeaux with Axemen and promote them to CR3, you won't have to wait for the plague. Barcino can be taken very easily. Also, don't promote them until they have 10XP, don't even heal them, the more experience they get from each battle the better it is.

seems like it cant be done without outside help. I dont like that.

A few tries combined with some thinking should be enough to beat the first of three goaös. I espacialy dislike the decission to place the first settler at a position at which one may not settle or you lose. thats unfair.

What, are you guys serious?
With the latest changes I added a few weeks ago (extra axeman and worker) I can easily achive the first UHV in 800
It seems even too easy to me
And I never settle to crappy or too close locations, I always stick to my perfect city placement

If you know exactly what to do, sure not that hard. But there is little room for messing things up.

That's true of course
But I don't want to make all UHVs too easy

PS: Please also try France with the latest svn version, not just Beta 13

Since the mod is feeling more and more stable I think we should focus more on evaluating the UHVs. Just some ideas:

1. Skip "settle that and that area" unless it is actually challenging.
2. Try to create UHVs that dont create to large time holes doing nothing.
3. Make every UHV doable on its own if but to nail all three you really need to focus. Or make one UHV run at a time but then really challenging ones. Not the UHVs where you work on all of them by just doing one thing.
4. UHVs shouldnt be dependent on too much luck.

And also:

1. Early starters still have too large advantage in the hands of a human with the exception of the Byzantines which always are a bit of a challenge.
2. Too little aggression and narrow settle maps.
3. Less barbs for AI and more barbs for human (invasion-like spawning). This one is coming.

Btw, where can I find a guide to use the SVN version?

I think in general UHVs are too easy on monarch (especially if you compare to other iterations of RFC), with the one notable exception of the first French (though I haven't tried the last SVN).

Here is how I got the SVN:
1: Download TortoiseSVN from http://tortoisesvn.net/downloads.html
2: Install, and make sure to install it for context menus.
3: Right click on mod folder and do SVN checkout for URL repository https://rfceurope.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/rfceurope

I'm somewhat confused by point 3 though. On my last computer (recently got a new one) I just made a folder for RFCEurope and did a SVN checkout on that one. However, when I did that now it created a subfolder, so games/RFCEurope/rfceurope, which meant the files had to be manually moved (and then couldn't be updated). Maybe I was doing something wrong? Anyways, the way listed as 3 works for now, even though it feels somewhat illogical.

Right, but I'd go even further: Theres no room for individual solutions. Theres just one. If you know it you win if you dont you lose.

Thats not challenging, thats boring.

I'm with rrosen on this. Not the french UHV is too hard, rather generally most of the UHVs are too easy
For example, I remember when the Kievan food UHV was implemented with 20.000, I made a test run, and could achive almost 55.000 on my second game. The first one, without any experince with the UHV was already around 40.000. I don't think playing for UHVs like this is challenging or even fun
I want to have UHVs on the level like the french 1st and the bulgarian 2nd (faith points) UHV
They are fairly hard, but definitely doable in most games
