long time player of Civ games in general.. but only now exploring end-game options other than culture and space in IV.. and I have to say.. I miss previous Civ versions "zones of control"

I usually choose a civ with a good early upgrade unit like the Mongols, take out a Civ or two early in the game.. but what Im running into today is now that Im around the 1800's and Ive 4 opposing civ's .. as soon as I take out one of their cities with Cavalry and Riflemen, Ive got 8+ turns to sit and wait before I start culturing again.. and in that time, an opposing friggin civ comes along with settlers and cripples my soon-to-be city by planting themselves nearby..

1 - Is there any way to decrease the period of unrest after I take over a city?

2 - short of declaring war on all the civs and butchering them as they land (I usually play Archipelago w/islands or snaky cont's) .. I havent any way of stopping them, do I?

thanks,

Brett

One tip I've seen here, and recently tried for the first time, was to bring a settler along with your war stack. Instead of taking over the enemy city, raze it to the ground and plant your settler on its ruins (or, more likely, a better nearby space). Thus, no period of unrest, and less danger of a quick flip back to the previous owners.

As to ZoC, I agree completely.

As to changing the period of unrest, you could probably mod that pretty easily if you don't feel it would be cheating.

If you have a Great Artist hanging about, he can build a great work in the city, which instantly brings it out of revolt and pops its borders. It's hard to do that for every city you capture, obviously.

An easier variation is to have a missionary for your state religion accompany the stack, so it can spread your SR to the city while it's still in revolt. This will allow its borders to expand faster afterwards (as well as eliminating some of the remaining unhappiness).

Apparently building culture and/or running artist specialists during revolt nonetheless seems to add up, popping borders faster once the revolt ends.

Using slavery to build a theatre or some other culture generating building in these cities could be helpful as well. In a lot of cases, a lot of the population is going to starve, so might as well put them to work before they... well... starve to death. :P

Exactly, crack the whip on those ungrateful souls who refuse the government of your superior country. If the place is really unhappy, i may whip it multiple times in one turn to avoid wasting population. This does add up a lot of unhappiness from the whip for a while, so be careful. Other than that, if they need culture, there are plenty of buildings to choose from: :whipped::whipped::whipped:

thanks for the tips all, after reading a couple guides etc Ive started a new game and have begun to use the whip a little more frequently.. works like a hot damn..

now.. to go finish butchering those french buggers..
