One point above is incorrect, in that it stated there was no reason to build a farm outside of a BFC unless you are planning on future city locations. Don't forget you can irrigate tiles which are not touching fresh water if they are touching a farmed tile. "Chaining" farms to bring the water to your grassland BFC tiles is a common practice.
