Big Navies Good or bad?

Last game i played i played the english, archipelo, and the navy saved me a pile of hassle... there was a sadistic satisfaction in sinking ship after ship of the countries allied against me, ;)...it was a c3c game.

I have had a few games where I neglected my navy. I had the Americans, oddly in both maps, crank out like 10 carrier and battleship combos to bombard the :):):):) out of my coastline. They would retreat after every turn, meaning my battleships wouldn't be able to get anywhere near them. Making fighters kind of helped, but they cranked out bomber after bomber and soon it became a game of making mostly fighters since, lets face it, the computer cheats like crazy sometimes.

After that I have made reasonable sized navy for fun and for dominance, even in continents. It lets me prevent their annoying one unit drops, submarines let me scout their islands shores and carriers can break a tough enemy pretty quickly if used right.

Er ... not really.

I would suggest it's pretty outrageous when I have a transport of marines lose to a single numidian mercinary.

But maybe that's just me.

Silly and outrageous, yes; hilarious, yes; cheating, no. It's entirely possible given the game mechanics, and could just as easily happen to a player as to a computer. Especially in Vanilla, where Marines are only 8/6/1 (unsure about PtW, but not in Conquests, where they're 12/6/1).

Frankly, the combat system *is* my one issue with CivIII, as I much prefer the Civ2 version - have no idea why they changed it.

If you play on an archipelego with the byzantines, then I will use a significant number of dromons, for there unique (for age bombard utility), that is a great use for a navy

If you never played Byzatines on Archipelgo, give it a try, and rmember the Dromon is a floating artillery piece

Ooops This is really a conquests comment, (i dont think byzatines are even in PTW)

In my (admittedly first) game i have built a grand total of two ships...but its a pangea map.

Sounds like archipello with scarce land to fight over might be interesting to play though, is there a way on civ 3 complete to make the % water even higher than 80%?

Yes and no. The 60/70/80% are hardcoded in the game mechanics, but those are just averages. I'm sure the mapfinder program could help you find a suitable map if you learn how to use it. Just set it to find maps with a low domination with your chosen paarameters.

really i don't use a navy very actively.
when it comes time for war i will build galleons or transports like theres no tomorrow but in peace time i dont worry about it too much even on an archipalagio
