I suppose I could test this in a game but hopefully someone already knows the answer.

Spamming biowells solves any health problems regardless what trees you focused.

But wondering - do you get the +1 health bonus only if that tile is worked, or is it a passive benefit soon as you build the biowell even if it is not currently being worked

The tile must be worked. All tiles work this way, I see where the confusion is though as in the tooltip the bonus health is.in the description and not in the yields.Biowells would be barararaoken if you didnt have to work them.

Great, thanks for the answer.

I guess since energy really isn't an issue usually by the time you get around to biowells that it doesn't hurt too much to spam a few extra, but good to know that it doesn't benefit me unless it's actually worked.

I've finally broken my CiV habit of hoarding gold, so instead of having a lot of surplus energy I tend to use it immediately to rush buy buildings and units so I can achieve victory a little faster each time - and biowell spam ends up being a large part of my tile upkeep.

In hindsight, I think I've been building like double the biowells than I really can work so I'll cut down on that next game since there's no health benefit from the extras

I think that at some point you get plenty of health from other sources. Farms then become much better again with that tech that gives +food and +energy. Plus no upkeep cost.
There is just that point, after the beginning and before late mid game where they can be helpful for health.

Correct!

I think that they used to provide health without being worked before the game launched. I seem to remember that from MadDjinn's first pre-release LP as PAC. The biowells were so good that the AI spammed them instead of terrascapes (not that terrascapes are that great).

Definitely if you go down the right virtues and affinity health unlocks. Sometimes though I play might games where I don't go that deep into industry for magnasanti or prosperity for eudaemonia.

Without those, even with affinity health buildings it gets tough to manage wide empire health without a lot of biowells. With one or both those virtue ones, then yes totally agree that with just health buildings you can basically spam purity farms all over the place - even better if you get both purity upgrades - the +1 food/energy, and the +1 production.

For non-prospertity and non-industry though, and knowing might isn't the best tree but sometimes I like to play pure warmonger games - the double strategic bonus lets you spam so many high cost affinity units it's pretty fun - biowells spam is basically what keeps me in the positive health.

The issue with biowells is that they don't serve much of a purpose of your playing optimally. If your going for straight domination then everybody will be dead so who cares about health? If your playing peaceful then you have plenty of health anyway. Even in hybrid games you win only 20 or 30 turns later then dom, so who cares if your health goes low. Its a weird improvement.

Sometime when im bored on lower difficulty ill spam a puppet capitol with them.
