Blackfish is a 2013 documentary that debuted at the Sundance Film Festival that year to rave reviews. Rotten Tomato rates it at 98%.

It is the story of how Orcas have been mistreated for decades at amusement parks, especially Sea World. It documents how intelligent they are, and how the offspring stay with their mothers their entire lives in the wild.

Numerous attacks have occurred in captivity at amusement parks, and so far 4 trainers have even been killed.

The documentary makes a compelling argument that these are no accidents, as Sea World continues to allege and despite video evidence to the contrary. SeaWorld was even caught lying about the last death in 2010. They claimed that the trainer had slipped and drowned when the video shows she clearly did not slip. The trainers who appear in the documentary contend that Tilikum, the main star at Sea World Orlando, grabbed her hair, pulled her down to her death, and ate parts of her after he thought he hadn't been properly rewarded for his performance. And that this is supported by video evidence. This was the second trainer that Tilikum has killed.

Blackfish has caused a dramatic loss in Sea World revenue. The stock has nearly lost half its value since the movie debuted.

SeaWorld has responded by incessantly showing PR puff pieces on TV claiming that none of it is true.

The documentary is showing on CNN right now, and it will rerun at 11 PM EST.

I highly recommend you watch this flick, and leave your comments about it here.

I haven't watched it, but I have seen a few short clips about the mistreatment of orcas recently, and several online news sites in Australia have mentioned it. I think I may have even read a Cracked article on it, and I hate Cracked. If the allegations I've read were true - and the evidence supports that claim - then something needs to be done about SeaWorld and others, ASAP.

This is the legacy of circuses and zoos, imo. I think they're both really poor ideas. As are keeping birds in cages, fish in tanks, and alligators in your swimming pool.

I'd advocate releasing them into the wild but I don't want them telling the other orcas about how f'd we are to them.

I don't want an orcalution on our shores.

Haha.

It is ironic that humans have literally turned supposed "killer whales" into the real thing by stealing their babies for the amusement of the masses.

The offspring of Tilikum will likely continue to kill even more SeaWorld employees, while they pretend it isn't really happening. That Orcas like being grossly mistreated and "rewarded' For performing in front of audiences so SeaWorld executives can continue to get rich on their suffering.
