HI,

I play civ for a long time, played CIv5 a lot and just bought GnK and BNW at once. So a lot to explore again. Used to play Deity and it did feel like an interesting challenge.

So far my experience and from what I have read on this forum it seems the difficulty level is broken. Many many guides and stories of early Deity wins, AI doesn't seem to expand anymore, a lot less DoW from rival civs...

Are these false assumptions or can you confirm?

I have only played like 7-8 deity games so I'm far from being an expert, but from my experience it heavily depends on who is on the map, and the map type. On fractal with Shaka and Genghis/Attila as neighbours, Deity is definitely brutal. On archipelago with peaceful civs, it's a lot easier (you still get DOW'd, but it's manageable).

AI's like Hiawatha, Augustus, Kamehameha and alike do expand heavily on deity. Which kills them in the long run. (-5% tech penalty per each city is huge, when someone settles 7 cities on ice) Lots of early DoW's, but if I expand a bit and survive the initial 100 turns - I can't lose. It is much easier to catch up in tech, compared to G&K. Late game abundance of happiness and what nots through ideology systems makes the game an easier ride.

I also noticed that AI builds NC very late.

So, yes, deity is less of a challenge, in my experience.

In my book those are false impressions. I am struggling with immortal much more post-BNW than what i did before. In my experience the AI is much harder, especially in the later eras from industrial and forward. Their science boosts seems to have been strengthened much more, and they are just as aggressive if not more in expansion and war.

It's easier and harder
I think as a nation builder, the game is easier cos AIs dont seem ti DoW anymore
As a aggressor, you got whole lot of punishment for being anti-peace

There's a difference between games with perfect outcome, and random games with random starting locations and random enemies.

This, exactly.

People that cook settings are the first and fastest to report their "easy" (cheesy?) wins on Deity.

Also my pet peeve responding/reading to these threads that claim 'easy' diety/BNW broken on a cooked map @ some non standard game speed no less!

::highfive::

Cooked settings = -80% penalty for consideration * RNG ; though we should always keep an open mind ;)

RNG = if I have had coffee

Aha.

Not referring to this particular OP, but a few of them start to sound like the ol' pathetic "my appendix is bigger than yours" song when they bash BNW for its alleged "passiveness"...

Hey, btw, where are you in the True North? Would be cool (literally) to meet some day... I'm south of the Fraser.

Hah. May be time for some Civ YVR club foundation or something similar...

Did you enjoy dancing at the rhythm of Dire Straits, if you know what I mean? Just checking if there is a generational gap... :D

This is off course true. But the trick could also be done with Vanilla. So I don't think picking good starts and settings matters for the assumption: difficulty civ Vanilla > civ BnW.

I am a newbie on the BnW and I am really hoping it is still a good challenge. Like it was at Vanilla. As far as I can see from the reactions here it seems opinions differ quit a bit.
