As for websites. Heh, I Googled "chess website" and on page 1 was this gem which hasn't been updated since 1998.
A site I used to like going to when I first started playing is Bill Wall's site. You could surf around on there for hours.
There are probably hundreds of other sites w/ tactical problems to solve & examples of openings. Even wikipedia has a fairly extensive listing of chess openings and some tactics & mating patterns (like the Epaulette mate).
