Anyone playing this ? I never played Borderlands 1, but this seems like a very fun Diablo like shooter.
It's free for this weekend. Too bad the download took the better part of Friday and I have to work on Sunday, but today I'll play it as much as I can.

My steam library yesterday said:
Borderlands - 2 days remaining.

I'm such an idiot.

Its 20% off for the Steam key on GMG using a coupon (they give them out a lot).

EDIT: Wow, a mod actually fixed the title in less than 3-7 days/weeks!

Also the coupon code on GMG is PARTP-ALCNO-TIESU (try reading that backwords) and gives $20 off.

I got it yesterday having never played it, it's pretty fun. I remember it getting a lot of flak when it came out because people didn't like the artistic direction but for me it's fine. My only real complaint so far is that there isn't enough variety in the types of enemies you face, but I'm only level 19 so maybe that will change.

I demo'd it (#1 that is). The Gamespy online servers are horrible. Very laggy---so much so that voice chat sounds like it was underwater.

I played the single player mode.
I find it neat that you can switch between multiplayer and singleplayer seemlessly with the same character. And the "cell-shaded" (Like Disney) graphics were pretty cool when they came out. Otherwise a console shooter on the PC---thumbs down. And no story.

I deleted it after about 90 minutes of playing it.

It's a great game, best played with a friend through means other than Gamespy. Borderlands 2 will fix most complaints I think. This game is all about getting loot and the fun of finding guns. Even there, I thought the gun diversity wasn't as great as touted, but it's going to go through the roof with Borderlands 2 apparently. The locations end up being boring in Borderlands 1, but the DLC fixed some of it. It's a game with an appeal for those who loved games like Diablo 2. It deserves a fair shot, with friends if possible. If you need a story to enjoy a game though, well too bad.

Its a co-op game, if you play it alone you will more than likely get bored. SP is kind of like playing L4D by yourself, with no bots. There is a lot of humour spread throughout the game too, and Borderlands 2 looks very promising to fix a number of issues with Borderlands. Although I doubt it will be super amazing to play by yourself.

Also there is a story, it might not be really strong and more of a goal but part of the fun was exploring the wacky world of Pandora. The DLCs definitely improve upon this though.

How many games of this type really have great stories anyway? I mean seriously, you don't play this time of game for the story, you play it to bust open loot piñatas.

I expect some J.R.R. Tolkien storylines when playing mindless shooters.

I expect quests and story that is not as mind-numbing as playing World of Warcraft.

I guess you guys don't like games like Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell, GTA 3 and 4, etc... Even BF:BC2 had a story to it's SP Campaign. Each to his own, but it's really the oddball sandbox FPS game that doesn't have some writing behind it's campaign (even if crappy writing, even for all those console FPS games).

I'd be lying to say Borderlands had zero attempts at characterization and background, but there's really no narrative pulling the thing together, other than "keep leveling". So it didn't hold my interest.

None of those are games designed to be played co-op though, Borderlands is.

Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 is completely COOP and multiplayer. Don't own SC:Conviction so I can't judge the story COOP mode, but there's one too Many console FPSs, even the ones with mediocre stories (usually defending or infiltrating against aliens), are basically COOPor deathmatches---2 to 4 controllers.

Dunno about Vegas 2, never played it, but the first 90 minutes of Vegas 1 wasn't exactly riveting or memorable either. Conviction is pretty consolized, dunno how its co-op works but I'm never going to buy it anyway (screw Ubisoft, I watched an LP of it instead).

I played Borderlands entirely solo and still had fun; the loot was what kept me coming back. Always wanted to find a bigger better gun. Killing stuff was also strangely satisfying in that game.

I've played and beat Borderlands at least 5 times on the PC and another two times on the Xbox because I wanted my roommate to experience it.

Can't wait for the new one though I'm gonna have to wait to play since I'll be travelling for work :\

That ought to be pretty easy, Tolkien wasn't very good at crafting a narrative.
