BOTM 26 Final Spoiler

Well I guess I am just a learner still. I have never thought about Vynd's way to victory. It must have been some stressfull play (the most enjoyable when victorious ) you had. I should look through civfanatics for more diplomatic play.

Well, as I stated before, did not played civ for a while. Did a few workers tech and then went after Monotheism, but...
4 turns before it should be mine it was gone. 2440BC.

well, I decided I want Great lighthouse. With out access to early marble/stone did not want to go after any resource depended wander.

2200 BC silver city founded
1560 Third city near silver on hills near floodplains.
900 BC got Create lighthouse.
after that nothing left to do but to city spawn.
425 4th
350 5th
325 6th
100 BC 7th, near stone.
My next settler was running to jungle, But city spamming Zara got there first 25AD
I had to reroute settler down.

Research wise I went after early monarchy, as happiness limited and a lot of floodplain available.

I miss Garden by 1 turn. Bloody Zara culturally took stone from me.
125 AD 8th city. City spawn stage ends.
Next I went after construction - Feodalism. I wanted to make war and make some vassals.
Civil service next.

Get generous trading and got access to Maces just when I wanted to declare, my stack standing at border with Darius. Shot down research and started upgrading.

I did not restart research for very very long time.

so about 760AD I shot down research and 820 AD declared on Darius.

War with him was short , he was just starting city spawn.

He capitulated after I took his holly city capital in
1040 AD.

I was thinking, quick, get to Zara before he got ability to build castle.

So, I just heal my stack and move it to Zara.

But I was too slow, zara got tech and build castles. I declare anyway.
My research till down. I think I had +0 gold on 100% taxes.
1110 AD declared was on Zara.
Tool his city near stone first and give it to Persia, so I do not have to worry about protecting it and about cultural pressure from all sides.

After that it become very slow. Only by using mass cats cyicide after taking 125% defense and attacking more then one turn, as I did not had enough units to kill all opposite units in one turn I took next 2 cities.

In mean time, using the fact that I was grinding Zara units, Persia too one more zara city on left. But because of my big looses, Zara did not feel like to capitulate.

On next city persia bring a big stack, and after I kill most of Zara units I let persia to take it, that reducing cultural pressure on my newly captured cities.

Finally 1530 AD Zara capitulated.

Please note, My research was shot down from 760 AD to 1530 AD.

Just to show how mach behind I was the same year I finish warring,
1530 AD Lincoln build Statue of Liberty.
There was no chance of taking war across the ocean.

Well, directed research using my 2 vassals as a trading partners.
All floodplain were cottaged, because there was no health for SE economy.

My economy Jump ahead very fast.
1690 I found Sid Sushi
1715 I found Mining corporation

Bouth in Hinduism holly city, which was single religion on our continent. I had to rebuild shrine after I took it. I stick wallstreet there and It become a gold cow.

Next the end of game I had about 0 upkeep on 100% research, My shrine + 2 corporation city brinning > 1000 gold/turn.

1800 AD UN, I am bad in diplomatic wins, did not get enough votes.
1802 Hollywood.
1810 The three Gorges dam.
1852 My Apollo program.
1880 Space elevator, somewhere about that time internet.
1901 I launched my ship.
In 1906
But Just 6 turns before I should had space win I got diplomatic win.
I was like WTH? I did not expect to win , Asked for resolution juts in to confirm no win, but in process my relationship improved and I suddenly got votes! LoL.

I do not mind.

1906 diplomatic win with 59631 score.

This BOTM was the last straw for me and my current computer. It's gotten so old and tired that maps like this take a minute IBT at 1AD and by the time a big army is out there the game time might as well be real time.

My main objective was to take the south part of the island and then pester ethiopia long enough to make him backwards and an easy vassal. His land was ok, but didn't really have settled sites that made much sense. Darius fell to super-crossbows very easily. He had iron and built swords which would sometimes fall without a single HP hit to me. I didn't see any others using high xp xbows so maybe it wasn't optimal. Plan was to use those to upgrade to rifles later and that worked quite well. Ethiopia was kind enough to allow some of these to get full drill and combat by providing sacrificial troops in a foolish DOW.

By the time I started to board and get into it with the other island it proved to be too much for my old girl. Had three quick crashes in succession and one was after a very intense turnset. I just played on as best I could, but it would be hopeless for submission.

I continue to be amazed/bemused at how fast the AI will wave the white flag in the late game, but will press on to their death in the early game.

Wasn't a huge fan of this map. Seems like it was tailor made for diplo/culture which is fine. The prior two maps were more fun.

retired....
I havent had a plan how to cope with this game. So the first was to last as long as possible.
I managed to get few cities, but omitted the defense so Darius DoW on me..I don not recall now since I played a few weeks ago..but Zara got involved as well..Somehow latter on I went for revenge and got Darius capitulated..but to Zara..Then I want for foolish plan...I was first to rifling (on our continent) and whip few rifles and declared on Zara..plan was to let his troops be defeated by my defenders in the cities..the ratio of power was 0,1 before I got rifles..it worked for few turns but then he brought cannons and all was lost...

1ad - 1000ad

Initially, history continued as envisaged. We stayed friendly with our neighbours on the continent for a long time while grabbing some terrain west of Persia. We also captured the Barbarian town Illinois there. :)

In 740ad, our caravels found the other continent and the remaining civilizations. Quite a bit later, also the small island in the north with the Whales. Trade was good, as Mali was teching strongly. They frequently waged war against the Dutch, who were hopelessly backward but somehow each time managed to regain their lost cities. :mischief:

1010ad - 1500ad

As Astronomy comes in, we notice that there is a small open patch of land still left in the very northwest of the other continent, with access to Crabs. We arrive in time to claim it. The maintenance hit is bearable, while our empire is still relatively small. Meanwhile, Poverty Point has started on a group of Trebuchets; it builds 8 in total. The AI are slowly falling behind in research, but their power is still a factor. Ethiopia especially has a large army. They are, however, pleased with us. :)

The second 12-turn Golden Age is working out well. We freely switch to other civics. Right after, we are the first to Liberalism and claim the expensive tech of Assembly Line. Simultaneously, the Taj Mahal is finished and Golden Age #3 starts. Rifling follows and we upgrade and switch to Nationhood to draft a good-sized army of fresh Riflemen. With Versailles completed in Spiro (at the lake), we are ready to expand.

In 1280ad, we declare on Persia, that is still depending on Macemen and War Elephants. Border stronghold Pasargadae falls in 1300ad. The Persian capital, Persepolis, follows in 1340ad. Persia poison the water supply in Cahokia as their ultimate revenge. Four turns later, it's all over and Persia is no more. The south of the continent is ours; we fill some empty spaces with new towns, and send the now veteran army north. Ethiopia may have a much larger military, but they have Musketmen, Knights and (unbelievably many) Catapults. :mischief:

The whip anger from the draft expires, Biology is discovered, followed by Medicine, and the population begins to boom. In 1430ad, we decide that Ethiopia has to go. They are simply too large. Combat odds are rarely below 98% (and usually 100%), but the going is slow, we have to wade through many stacks. Ethiopia destroys some of our mills, farms and pastures. We fight on two fronts, with cannon/frigate-supported columns west and east, In 1450ad, the first border town falls.

1505ad - 1790ad

In 1510ad, the Ethiopian capital of Aksum is captured, but war weariness is rampant and in 1520ad we pause our efforts and allow our units to heal and move to the new frontier. Mining Inc is founded with our Great Engineer from Poverty Point, and executives from two corporations run all over the continent. Poverty Point builds Tanks. In 1570ad, we declare again on Ethiopia and mop up in just a few turns. By 1585ad, the continent is all native. Many Infantry get assigned policing duties, but the elites, as well as our tanks and cannons get shipped to our outpost on the other continent, where the Dutch are parading their one remaining War Elephant.

Research is b-lined towards Plastics to get the Three Gorges Dam. :)

In 1615ad, the Dutch declare once again on Mali, while we begin our 4th and final Golden Age. One turn later, we invade with our tanks. It's easy going; Delft falls immediately. In 1635ad, the Netherlands capitulate and we take a big step towards domination. Our troops immediately move south, to the border with America that is fast building culture.

The year 1650ad sees the remarkable discovery of a process that uses coal to acquire aluminum, a metal that before did not exist anywhere in the world. It will be used in two cities only. We now have our eyes on the skies.:nuke:

In 1665 we declare on America, just to make sure. They capitulate in 1685ad after we quickly took two towns, bringing us right on the threshold of domination. We now have two vassals; sometime later Mali, although way ahead of their neighbours, voluntarily submit to India, leaving just one, not really competitive, rival.

We decide to leave them be and expand beyond this realm. The end of the Golden Age sees the completion of the Apollo Program. A similar program would later be finished by Mali, but they didn't get much further. In 1740ad, a fully developed spaceship is launched, to arrive safely on a new world in 1790ad.

I'm not very inspired to provide a decent write-up, but I wanted to share some key facts about my game, where I tried to get a fast space win. Copy/paste from autolog will have to suffice.

Turn 137/500 (540 AD) [29-Jan-2010 20:53:39]
Captured Susa (Darius I)
Persian Empire has been eliminated

Turn 211/500 (1505 AD) [01-Feb-2010 21:18:06]
Captured Massawa (Zara Yaqob)
Ethiopian Empire has been eliminated

Turn 251/500 (1705 AD) [06-Feb-2010 00:52:55]
Mining Inc has spread: Gondar
Cereal Mills has spread: Aksum
Aksum begins: Hydro Plant (3 turns)
Research begun: Genetics (4 Turns)
100% Research: 2765 per turn
0% Culture: 256 per turn
0% Espionage: 69 per turn
0% Gold: 138 per turn, 1266 in the bank

Shouldn't look that bad, if it weren't for the fact Lincoln got a Religious Victory that same turn.

Contender start.
A Sioux without a pony is like a banquier without a sou (unless they’re on Wall St, then they have the US Gov in pocket, but that is now, this was then:). Therefore, AH to findum horse. But the Great Spirit put the horses near the white man so we must hurry to claim them. First teepee right next to horse. Stupid white man went for the elephants.

Great Spirit say this land belong to us. All of it. But there is much work to do. When the white man discovered this country, we were running it. No debt, everyone free, squaws did all the work. White man thought they could improve on this. We must get more squaws to do the work . BC 1080 war. Two white squaws have new owners. What? City defended by only one pitiful archer. White man archer is weak and timid with no experience. He green white man  . Sioux chariot kill archer with one blow. Now white man city belong red man. Next city will not be so easy. Smokum peace pipe, while we build up braves. Must keep barbs from white man archers to keep them weak and make us strong. War party head out again. Many braves go to happy hunting ground but by BC 250 no more cursed white man on our land.

To celebrate we must honor Great Spirit and build great wonder in stone. New teepee by stone and for cow to make pemmican. Must claim this land quickly. The black man from Ethiopia is spreading very fast and is very strong and he was friend of white man. He see red when he see us. We must learn to make better weapons. Black man demand things and make threats. Better to have less thunder in the mouth and more lightning in the hand. But it is good to have strong enemy, so that if defeated we will not bear shame. We must be cunning as the coyote and make friends with this black man until we are ready to strike. But no trade with him. Bad for wampum but keep him weak. The eagle spirit say there is another world to trade with. We trade with them. We must build strong ship to take us there.

Further on: The plan is working. We get to other world and make friends there who teach us many things while the black man is quite backward. The medicine man’s peyote-induced vision of spiked tomahawks on a chain should work quite well on the black man’s primitive army. It takes much time to build big war party but we have the patience of the owl. Surprise is our friend. When we strike we quickly take 3 cities. The black man has many, many cities but still he not like it. Then time for peace pipe. When shaman came up with the thunderstick idea it was just a matter of time till the whole land belong to us. The medicine men are gaining much knowledge and we are first to be Liberal. Take Nat. Then war again and take 3 more cities. Zara still has no friend and does not even know about other world. Eventually we own entire continent. We have many friends in other land who are eager to trade with us and we now have many resources. The idea of teepees on distant worlds takes hold among our people and it makes our hearts swell with pride. We are well down that path when out of the blue we are presented with a UN vote. Without thinking we vote for the Big Sioux, and there are a lot of us. Unexpectedly we win on first vote in 1802. No teepees in space… sigh.

All I wanted was to settle where ZY settled ...
One itsy-bitsy town, population 1 and a single archer standing guard.

ZY went insane!

He stomped my last dog soldier in 1240 AD.
I never made it past Classical Era.

Oh, if I could only do it all over again ...

... I would make the same mistake.

But, if I could do it all over again AND remember the prior timeline ;)

Nothing special- I took the challenger save and got a 1914 space race victory (quite late I imagine). Ghandi almost got a diplo victory when my spaceship was in flight. And ghandi had me a little fearful since he had the internet and actually had all the techs ~3 turns before me, but nothing happened. He finished acouple turns after I launched.

I'm happy and had a fun game. It sure felt long though- I guess I shouldn't play a civ game in one day......(I did have breaks though)

I'll probably write some more later. But quickly: I just continued teching, had a brief war with persia where I got 3 cities, actually got liberalism, got the taj mahal, and had some good gp farming.

edit: screenshot final (farmed up some for population growth at the end)

Spoiler :

With a huge amount of whipping, particulary catapults with a lot of overflow, I build Sistine's in 1130 AD in the GP Farm and breathe a sigh of relief.

What's with the catapults and overflow? I dun understand what is happening in that sentence.

What's with the catapults and overflow? I dun understand what is happening in that sentence.
Yeah, it sounds wierd, but it worked well for me.

Basically, I had loads of food, but not much production. Whipping is your means for converting from one to the other, but it's not so efficient for national and world wonders.

I was running Hereditary Rule, so every military unit increased the happy cap. I had so much food that I could regrow 2 pop in about 3 or 4 turns (can't remember exactly - I haven't looked at this save in a while, and opening it up would require me to load the old HOF mod, so numbers are guessed from memory here)

Lets say Catapult costs 50:hammers:, 1 pop = 30:hammers: +50% for Bureaucracy bonus = 45 :hammers:. After investing <5, eg 4:hammers: into a catapult you can still 2 pop whip it, getting 90:hammers:, 44 of which are overflowed into the next build. In this case the Sistine Chapel.

So by swapping between Catapult (2 turns) -> Wonder (1 turn) -> Catapult (2 turns) -> etc. and with enough food to regrow 2 pop in 3 turns you can sustain this and make about ~52 :hammers: for every 3 turns, or ~17 :hammers: per turn invested into the Wonder - not including the 'free' catapult. Sure, that's not great compared to a decent capital with lots of production, but for a city with pretty much only food I think it does quite well.

Oh, and you also finish up with lots of Catapults

I never use overflow whipping so I'm not familiar - is it only worth it if you actually use the placeholder unit (Catapults?)

I suppose they serve as garrison if nothing else.

It's also worthwhile to whip buildings that generate a lot of overflow and use that overflow for the wonder you're building. Or Missionaries. What to whip changes as you add Bureaucracy, Forge, Factory etc.

Whipping the wonder itself yields only the basic 30 shields a head, so don't be quick to do that unless you fear that the AI is close to completion.

Yeah - the fact I used catapults is irrelevant - ideally you would build more useful infrastructure or whatever you need. The key point is that you can whip something and generate lots of overflow, usually a 2x pop whip.

Whipping a wonder directly is worse than the 30 :hammers: per pop, since there is a penalty. Same as if you were rush buying a wonder under Universal Suffrage.

Man, this game needs a lot more research and maths than I thought. But I like it anyway.
Thanks for the explanations.

well, whip overflow units is one way to build Global Theater. When you finally build it, all this units become free to go and kill somebody :)

Domination 1765AD, 217k Points

Settled in place. Build workboat, worker, warrior, …
Techs.: Mining, BW, AH, Writing, Wheel, Pottery, Alpha, ...

Oracle is built 1640BC by Mansa.
650BC Pyramids (beside the Taj Mahal which I built with a Great Engineer this was the only wonder.) Tried to get the Great Lib with a GE but in 500AD one turn to Literature was left when Mansa built it.

War 1:
50 AD – 540 AD

Darius with Cats + Swords; Also bribed Zara in the war. Maybe a fault because he had later so many units which was really annoying.

After the not peaceful expansion I decided to go for Steel because Zara had lots of units and the cities already had a big defense bonus. Even with rifles it is probably a huge problem to capture these cities without good siege weapons. Maybe Trebs do the job?

1040AD Liberalism → Astro
Then Steel, Nationalism.

War 2 (till the end):
1250AD – 1610 AD
Zara; Started with Cannons + mainly drafted Musketeers + some Pikes against knights. Later Rifles and Infantry.

1370 AD – 1535 AD
Gandhi with Cannons + Rifles; became a Vassal with one city left.

1560 AD – 1665 AD
Willem; a total useless war which made me almost quit the game. After capturing 3 cities the war tromped sounded and Mansa declared on me! What? Mansa the tech leader? Fear came up. Why did he declare? He was a Vassal of Lincoln and this was his chance to be free again. My guess :).

OK, did some reading about Vassal States. Nothing I know much about but something which should be improved. How to get the necessary 64% of the land? Lincoln will be a Vassal at pleased. Ok, get him pleased...
Mansa did no major harm, a destroyer killed fishing boats and a Galleon but no major city was captured. Made peace with him and Willem for one of those crappy Dutch cities. Lincoln is pleased but “he does fine on his own”. Hmpf.
Collected the remaining Infantry, shipped around the continent and:

1745 AD – 1765AD
Lincoln; Capture two cities simultaneously and after the third he is my Vassal. Uff. I'm happy.

War stats:
301 (57lb, 37 knights, 23 cats, 23 maces, ...) units killed. 80% are surely Zaras units ( :) a guess, but it felt like that).
56 (24 cannons, 7 cats, …) units lost.
→ This is almost an 1 to 6 factor. I easily lost 10 units due to lack of concentration.

Though game for me; some thoughts:
- Infantry is very powerful, something I underestimated.
- Should use Vassal States more to my favor and have a closer look on the diplo relations.
- Should improve my unit logistic and attack plans.
- Founded Sushi late, didn't spread it at all.
