Retired 1540ad

Things were going so well, I got a GE, the disliked Celts were clear leaders and going to be my opponent, the next 4 AI were all at friendly, then it all started unravelling just a few turns before I built the UN.

The Koreans switched out of Caste, their favourite civic. They refused to switch back.
The Americans switched out of Mercantilism, their favourite civic. They refused to switch back.
Isabella & HC started a war against each other, and both kept asking me to join in and stop trading with the other.

At 1400ad it was a certain victory, by 1500ad I was UN Secretary General, but couldn't win the victory vote, and rapidly losing cites to the Celts massive army. :suicide:

I tried going light and shooting for a culture victory, playing the Adventurer save. (I haven't played in awhile and have never won a game at this difficulty)

I built three villages and teched the cultural, um, techs asap but was beaten to music (which sucked). Beelined for Liberalism and switched to Free Speech, dropped my research to 0% and invested in culture (big mistake). 100 turns from my culture victory the Celts declare war on me and massacre my musket-men with massive stacks of infantry and Calvary. :P

Hrmmm... I was in a close space race with several others, and silly me, though that being in defensive packs with everyone of significance would protect me... That of course was stupid. I did not that while I am in a defensive pack with two nations, they are not with each other, and when they attack each other, I will get drawn in.

It happens, and my WARRIORS were no match for Boudicas MEch Infantry! I lost one city on turn one, and would have been wiped out in 10 turns, I estimate. Anyway, no point in continuing... Oops!

^^^DPs are tricky animals. You have to be absolutely sure about who you align with. I almost never DP with more than one AI as that can spell disaster as you just learned.

Ha...the was one crazy azz finish to a Space loss to Boodeeeka

I'd experienced something I'd never experienced before - MASS TECH STEALING by 1 AI. I'm not even remotely exaggerating here. .....

First, I'll say that despite a couple of good nearby resources, our Hub was not that stellar of land. IMO...you either make Mids a priority or go on a somewhat early warpath, which is not easy on this type of map. I did neither.

I ended up losing Lib to Capac in 500AD by 1 freakin' turn, ofc. Almost thought of quitting there.

At this point - again eschewing war if at all possible this game - I can go Diplo or Space. I'd not done Space in a long time and, honestly, it really is not one my better VCs at all simply as I rarely even try it.

So I decide Space and focus on doing two things - making Constitution and Democracy a priority. Constitution for Rep an Demo to make a viable Bureau cap. It actually paid off too. I was well ahead on the Space Race at one point.

Meanwhile, I'm friends with Boudi, Izzy and Roos in a Hindu lovefest - that would not last for ever - at least for the others. Wang was hated by everyone as usual and Capac not much better. Had Hanny up to about +9 at one point - he never even adopted Free Market.

Anyway, so I'm solid Friends with Boudi the whole game. Then at some point she goes bonkers on map. Just constant war. However, the whole time she goes for Space too and even builds the Internet.

But get this ...ha...her internet never took any techs from me. No joke. The other AIs did not have my techs.

I'm actually buildings Space parts around the time Boody builds Apollo. Then over several turns she literally steals upwards of 50 to 60 thousand beakers of techs for me. I'm not joking. Fission, Fiber, Fusion, Satelites, etc. And her production is way more than mine.

Anyway, she goes from not really being in the Space picture to launching 12 or so turns before I can even launch - and she only built 1 engine. I held out hope that her mission would fail, but that seems to rarely if ever happen to the AI.

Ugh..tough loss. Hanny was darn close to culture but I would have beat him.

I thought I had the thing won and that only Capac would approach me. So I bribed Boudi on Capac and started another world war - sans me - i never touched war the whole game. Didn't faze the Celt queen at all. She stole all me techs and built all her parts in before I could blink.

I didn't have much hope for this game, even on the adventurer save. It lived up to expectations, but definitely didn't play out in the expected way. I settled in place, went for the gold SW with my 2nd city but I eventually lost that to barbs. Then I put a city on the horses down south, but it was so far from my cap that my fledgling economy sputtered. I spent most of many time through 1 AD going after barb cities with axemen and chariots. Eventually, I expanded up to 8 cities, but by that time the Celts and Spanish both got a city onto my chunk of land.

I tried to make something of it, but I was so far behind in tech I couldn't even trade. It was 1625 when I retired. I was working on Constitution while everyone else was at Rocketry, Industrialism, etc. Maybe the strangest things is that nobody started a war up through that date. Any of them could've wiped me out easily, and my relationship was only Cautious with a couple of them. Anyway, I saw no way to pull off a victory, and no point in playing another eight hours to get a loss.

That was an intense game.

In the late BC I adopted hinduism as it was the major religion. I knew it would but me at odds with Boudica.

After taking a few cities from Wang Kon Boudica went for me in 1040 AD.
I had just signed a defensive pact with Isabella and Huayna Capac. Which might have removed some pressure.

She had five times my army and tech superiority. I had just researched gunpowder but had not build any muskets. I whipped a castle in Alexandria (wheat/gems) and decided nationhood was my only chance. I also made a trade mission which got me 1700 gold.

My army stod in Alexandria until 1100 when I defences were down to 17%. I know that I could not afford to loose my army so I move my army up to the gems hill and whipped a lone musketman to defend Alexandria.

In 1110 I got Nationalism and converted to Nationhood. Every turn Boudica would attack up on the hill and loose some unit and kill some units, but my reinforcements were more numerous. I converted to Theology as well to give my drafted units a promotion. I realized that I needed stronger units to have a chance and decided to get chemistry steel.

Switching back and forth between nationhood and bueaucracy i manage to fight Boudica back. Captured three cities using catapults and trebs before I got steel. I was at the time fighting culrasiers with trebs, war elephants and muskets.

Isabella decided we needed more help and made all hindus join the war. Roosvelt and Hannibal joined the war. Roosevelt lost a city and at last a cavalry stack from Isabella arrived and took two cities in the central parts. She also captured one city on Boudicas spoke and weakened an other one before she made peace. all other nations made peace as soon as their army arrived to a celt city, without attacking.

With steel in I whipped out cannon to go with my drafted muskets. Meanwhile I tried to run my economy. I was trading my techs to Roosevelt and Wang Kon who were both behind everyone but me.

Still being so far behind I made the desperate move to go for a diplomatic victory. After steel all my techs were on the way to Mass media. Which included things like optics. My plan was to reduce Boudica to 2 cities and then gift her the united nation which I had a GE prepared for.

In 1500 I passed Boudica in tech. In 1520 I manage to trade for rifling. In 1525 Bitracte fell. I expected Boudica to take it back since it was only 1 axemen and 2 spears that was able to get into the city. She was 3 turns away from rifling. but two more cities fell before she got it. I forgot to plunder her horses so she upgraded her cuirassiers to cavalry.

In 1630 I made peace with Boudica after taking all her main land. I demanded one island and biology in the peace treaty. I was at radio and hinnibal had already finished mass media.

I did get to mass media and rush the UN before anyone else built it. With good relations with Hayna Capac, Roosevelt and Isabella I fought I could win without gifting UN away. I also did not want to loose any pop.

I paid Hayna Capac to change to hereditary rule and change myself. I also changed myself and Hannibal into free market. I did not get Hannibals votes in the election. Something had made it slip down to +7 from +8. Probably mutual war bonus from the long gone Celt war that was going away. also I was watching in horror as Isabella and Hannibal was fighting. I was afraid of them asking me to join or of Isabella getting tomuch population.

I decided to return to my original plan of gifting the UN to Boudica to get Isabellas votes. This made Roosevelt upset and I lost his votes.

Luckily for me I still had enough votes with support from Isabella and Hayna Capac.

Diplomatic victory in 1755.
I have a feeling this map was easier then the last deity map. Without the choke point I would not have survived my terrible start. I was a very close game. I had a lot of luck. First that Wang Kon and Roosevelt was behind the other AIs so I was able to get three techs for each one I got. I never had tech parity with Roosevelt but if I had noone to trade with it would have been over. Isabella suddenly gifted communism to me which really help with tech trades and producing cannons for the war.

I fought I had lost it so bad early on. It was not until 1300AD somewhere I could smell victory. And even then it was far away and not easy to achieve.

Just some number to have a feeling on how far behind in tech I was.
in 620 I researched education and traded for Litrature, Machinery, Construction and monarchy. Same year Isabella got liberalism.

I got alphabet in 1070 AD. I did not need it before I wanted spies to keep track of Boudicas armies.

Btw, my only wonder was united nations. I'm not that wild about industrious.

The game is also available with swedish commentary on my passworded twitch channel. If anyone wants to have a look you may ask for the password. Sadly the first two parts are missing.

looks like i will not submit in time.
But no way i'll lose my game.
tech leader in all that mattered (MC, lib, MT, riffling) and tied an other important ones (CS, communism).
I builded lots of wonders and especialy the most precious one: TGL. will try to avoid corp as mutch as i can...
I had vassaled wang with cav and i'm invading hanibal at this point (cav vs cannon is fun).

too bad i started too late for the submission.

To bad. Just half a year to the next one.

jesusin, contender. Goal: Fastest cultural victory. Result: 1520AD cultural victory.

I didn't build any cottage this game and I didn't have Pyramids.
I never thought this was possible. How did it work? I can answer with a single word: trade.

As usual in a peaceful Deity game, I spent more than 50% of playing time on F4 screen, either trading or managing diplo relations.

I didn't really made good use of the spiritual trait. Used it to get my first 2 GS more easily. Then stayed non stop in slavery till Liberalism. Why? Because I had 3 settled-too-late-cities and religions were acquired too late. Settling my 9th city 10 turns sooner would have meant 10 more turns of Castes+Pacifism and 6 turns less in my victory date.

Wasn't first to Music by 1 turn.

Capital was GPFarm.
Horses city with Moai was production Legendary city (Parthennon and Sistine's).
South city with Wheat, Cows, Sugar, sea, 3lakes was third do-what-you-can Legendary city.

Liberalism 680AD, traded for Banking on the same turn. 100% culture from them on. I had money to burn. Payed 1200g just to accelerate Constitution for Representation.
Usual tricks to get more GP sooner. 1500cpt and 400 GA GPPpt by 1300AD.

Cultural Victory 1520AD. Multipliers 4.5-3.5-3.5, bombs 2-6-7, base cpt 150-130-120. 2GS bulb Philo & Educ, 15 GA bombed, total 17GP, none of them for free.

That is very impressive. That is faster then any culture game I have played and you did not use cottages.
