BOTM save won't load under Vista

I'm trying to play my first BOTM, but when I try to load the save it gives me a message saying:
"The save file you have selected in protected to ensure that the assets in your mod folder have not been changed."

And crashes.

I've searched and seen some other people with this problem but even after uninstalling Civ IV and BTS and reinstalling I still have the same problem

I even installed Civ IV 1.74 and BTS 3.17 before 3.19 and then BUFFY. AssetChecker came up saying HOF-1.74.004 was missing so I installed that too just to see and it didn't work either but I suppose that's completely unrelated.

I'm using Vista and tried all of the Vista fixes for the HOF mod but they haven't worked. Didn't try creating another admin account though... maybe I should but does anyone have any ideas in the meantime?

Can you load up BTS, load up the Buffy mod, and then load up a new single player game (the play now button) with no problem? No warning messages?

Where is the Buffy mod saved on your computer? In my games, or in program files?

Have you dealt with both issues ... the folder permissions issue, and the running program as administrator issue? Might need to deal with permissions in both program files and my game, depending on where Buffy is living ...

Are you trying to play from an account that has adminsitrator priviledges?

If yes to all, then I am stumped, if no to any, we might have found the issue. (Of course, second question is not a yes/no question ... :mischief:)

Let's see...

I can start a new game with Buffy. However, it says that it's not valid for HOF use and to see Settings in the Victory screen. I get there and it says I need to check Lock Modified Assets and CRCs are missing.

The mod is saved in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\BUFFY-3.19.003

I think so. "Run this program as an administrator" is all greyed out though but I assume that's because I'm playing from the one and only administrator account and so everything is run as admin... I assume :mischief:

Think it might have something to do with the CRCs and Lock Modifed Assets?

Hmm... interesting though. I just made a Custom Game and checked Lock Modified Assets. I go to the Victory screen and it says:
"The assets are different from a standard install. Contact the HOF staff."

Maybe we're getting somewhere now. What assets? The game or the HOF mod? Either way it seems quite strange when it's a fresh install of Civ IV as I described and I got the mod from the link in the BOTM 31 topic.

Perhaps you should run "Asset Checker", available in the area I linked to before. You should post the results in the HoF forum for Denniz to have a look at.

The other though I had is whether you are running any other mods, like a terrain pack or some varied unit types or something? :hmm:

Ah crap. Problem solved

AssetsChecker showed I had an extra file: CvExoticForeignAdvisor.py. It was showing that for ages but I assumed that wouldn't effect things since it was just an extra file and obviously not an altered part of the mod or something.

Took it out of the folder and the file loaded, bah

So it's all solved now at least... thanks everyone. Now the only question remains: Where did it come from? I googled it before and saw that it changes the way the Foreign Advisor screen is set up... doesn't sound like something I'd bother to download or even know about. Gah.

I can definitely safely delete it though, right? I suppose this is what happens when you don't make sure something is completely uninstalled before reinstalling :p

Greyed out checked, or greyed out unchecked? Maybe send us a screenshot of this, for our future reference, as that seems different from my Vista experience.

Not "Oh joy, problem solved?" You telling us you are disappointed to be able to play? :mischief: ;)

I am curious, which folder was it in? Sounds like a component of Buffy or one of the older HOF mods. And why "Bah"? ... see above. ;)

Welcome to the BOTM! :goodjob:

(Bill for my fee is in the mail ... you don't think this diagnostic expertise comes for free, do you?)

Greyed out unchecked in fact. Is this bad? :mischief:

Nah, just disappointed that I went through all that and in the end it came down to something that I'd seen near the start of the problem when I first used the AssetsChecker :p

Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Assets\Python\Screens

In the same folder as CvForeignAdvisor.py etc.

That wasn't part of the deal :mischief:

I'd say not bad if it works ...

Maybe run as admin is greyed out because it is set up to run in compatibility mode as XP SP 2? If it was not running in compatibility mode, maybe run as admin would be an option? Just a thought ...

That wasn't part of the deal :mischief:
Ok, for that, I am going to charge double my usual fee!

(Don't worry, 2*0 = 0)

I think that CvExoticForeignAdviser.py file is part of BtS. It should be in Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets\Python\Screens.

I've actually seen problems with that same file in the Mac version. Turns out the Windows and Mac versions are different, but the Windows version seems to be installed by Steam for Mac
