This is NOT inspired by this thread, but by an off-topic discussion from a thread in the Civ3 Creation and Customization, about an European scenario.

So, what is your opinion, where does Europe end? Which are its boundaries? This seems to be a very controversial topic lately. :)

For options 1-11, vote for whichever you find closest to your views. For options 10-24, vote for which countries you believe to be in Europe.

Done, you can merge the threads.

Its not something one can have an opinion on...

Europe:

In anticipation of the poll ( :p ), I say in the west the Atlantic Ocean, in the south the Mediterranean sea and the east the Ural Mountains, the Caucasus, the Black Sea.
That are more or less the correct geographic boundaries. I don't care about the political ones.

That means Russia is partly European, so is Turkey.

EDIT: Crosspost (in a thread by Mirc  ) The map by Truronian says it all

Oh yes, there are lots of opinions on this...

Check
this
thread (on a totally different topic, but with a huge hijack :D) if you don't believe me. ;) Some people don't find even Ukraine in Europe, some people don't find Scandinavia in Europe, some people don't find the UK in Europe, etc.

:)

Well, they are wrong.

Having the 'opinion' that the Ukraine is not in Europe is liking having the 'opinion' that the Great Dane is not a type of dog.

Dammit, I mistakenly included Israel, Iran and India. Too little sleep last night.

I voted correctly on the first question: Extended geographic definition.

Including Russia is a no-brainer as its cultural territory at the beginning of the nation's history was entirely within geographical Europe.

Including Turkey is not quite as clear since only a small part of its modern-day territory is in Europe and it was founded within recorded history by invaders/migrants from outside Europe, but I prefer to do so because of its long subsequent history of being closely involved in modern and early-modern European affairs as a player rather than as a plaything, if you get my point.

Israel is a border case; it is certainly not part of geographical Europe, but has a closer cultural bond with Europe -- in some sense it is a fairly recently-established Euro-American colony.

Well, it geographic Europe ends as pictured above. However, I consider there's no reason for political Europe to reach the same borders. IMHO, All balkanic countries should reach the EU (including Moldova), but Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Belarus and the Caucasus shouldn't.

Geographic Europe. I counted both Turkey and Russia as part of Europe because both have some territory in Europe.

Of course, if I were in the EU, I would have been fine with starting accession talks with Morocco in the 1970s when it requested to do so despite it being outside of geographic Europe.

Agreed. :)

The only country in the Balkans of which I'm currently skeptical about is Albania, but they can evolve, of course. IMO, countries like Croatia fit already all the necessities of an EU member.

Other definition: There is no discrete border on the east or southeast, but rather a fuzzy blend of Europe and non-Europe.

Voted Albania, and only Albania. Europe's boundaries should be restricted to Albania.

I voted 1, assuming that the perfid albion is in it too.

(sorry for that but why is israel in the europian song contest every year?)

Same as why they play international sports tournaments against european countries. Cos their neighbors don't want to play/sing with them.

Turkey is in both Asia and Europe, same as Russia.
