Break defensive pact?

Is it possible to break a defensive pact? I've tried to check our current deals, but I cannot find out how to do it. I have another AI character with whom i am in good favor that I would like to join up with, but he won't while i am pacted with this lesser character who is really just hitching a ride on me. (stupid me)

FWIW, the manual notes this is an 'annual trade' so should be available to cancel anytime. The manual also notes it is cancelled if either party attacks anybody so starting a border skirmish might cancel it for you.

I haven't observed this in game so can't verify the manual's information.

If you contact the leader and select what are our current trades, it should list all your current deals and if you click on defensive pact in the selection it should give you a popup that says, are you sure you want to cancel this deal?
