Civ II Verne Scenario
I'm modding my copy of Final Frontier, making minor tweaks here and there. But what I REALLY want to do is add events to the game to make it a much more interesting universe.

So, Civ community, what events would YOU like to see in Final Frontier? :scan:

Wow, I'm a little shocked that no one has posted ANY ideas for events for the Final Frontier mod, but then again, it's only been a few hours. Perhaps I need to get the ball rolling. So here's a few of my* ideas:

"Colonizing" Events:
I was thinking that it would be pretty cool to have some events that took place upon colonizing a star system (i.e., using your Colony Ship to found a city). I think there's a lot of potential here, because after all, these are PLANETS that could have indigenous inhabitants, special resources, relics of long-extinct civilizations, etc. These would of course be fairly rare; every city founded is not going to get one!
I. "The colonists discover indigenous inhabitants with a highly structured economy, beautiful cities, and advanced farming techniques. How should the colonists react?" 1. Embrace this new culture and try to live peacefully with them! (+1 population in the new system) 2. They must be wiped out to make way for our glorious empire; plunder their civilization! (+150ish? :gold:) 3. Though they may be a bit "backward" technologically, perhaps we can learn something from them! (increased influence in the system? extra :science:s toward current research?)
II. "The colonists have discovered an incredible and enormous creature living in the harsh conditions of the atmosphere of a gas giant in the system. What should we do?" 1. It could be a great source of food...let's harvest this resource! (+1 :food: on the planet) 2. Amazing! Let's make it the symbol of this star system and the pride of it's people! (+1 Influence and Happiness in the system) 3. This will increase tourism! Let's bring people to see this gentle giant! (+1 :traderoute: and +1 :commerce: on the planet?)
III. "The colonists have found extensive ruins of an extinct but obviously advanced civilization. What should we do?" 1. We should preserve these amazing echoes of greatness for posterity. (+4 Influence in the system) 2. Excellent! Their loss is our gain; search for valuables! (+350ish? :gold:) 3. We should study these technological marvels and better ourselves. (+1 free tech? extra :science:s toward current research?) 4. Let's make this archaeological gold-mine a Council of Planets Heritage Site and bring in the tourists! (+2 :traderoute: and +2 :commerce: on the planet) 5. We should put such advanced machines to work for us! (+3 :hammers: on the planet)
IV. "The colonists have stumbled upon a remarkable new metal that is stronger AND more pliable than all known metals. They want to know what to do with it." 1. We should reward these brave colonists by using this material to construct a grand city for them. (+1 population, +1 happiness) 2. This incredible metal should be sold off-world so that everyone can benefit from such a find! (+1 :traderoute:, +1 :gold: for this system's Spacedock?) 3. We should mine it and use it for their factories and machines. (+2 :hammers: for this system's Factories?)
V. "The colonists have all died due to diseases, harsh living conditions, and ferocious creatures on the new planet." (lose the Colony Ship and the city)
There are MANY more that could happen here! Any other ideas? Changes you would make to the outcomes above?

Other Events
I'll probably modify some events from the "regular" game as well, like buildings "burning down" (I'll come up with something more...futuristic :) ), the reputation ones (maybe not a marriage though? something else?), and others. But how about some new ones?
I. "An enzyme created by a plankton on one of the moons in this system has been found to increase resistance to diseases and reduce the effects of stress." 1. Well, that's nice and all, but let's tell the people that it's actually an aphrodisiac. (+1 happiness in the system) 2. Great! Let's start using this wonderful little plant! (+2 :health: in the system) 3. Plankton? Gross! Nobody wants to deal with that! Let's sell it off-world! (+200ish? :gold:)
II. "A plague has begun spreading from the festering swamps on a planet in this system. The people are demanding aid-- what should we do?" 1. Send emergency medical professionals from other systems to help in this crisis! (-150ish :gold:) 2. "Demanding!?" How dare they! Let the whiners die for all I care! (-1 population, -1 happiness in the system for X turns) 3. Oh no! All we can afford is a few battlefield medics! (-1 health for X turns, -50ish :gold:)
III. "A few of the citizens of this star system have evolved and gained the unbelievable ability of telepathy. The media is having a field day and we must make a decision on what to do with them." 1. These aberrants are an unethical and unacceptable invasion of the privacy of other citizens. They must be eradicated. (+1 happiness in the system) 2. These telepaths are an incredible resource and as good citizens should help their communities in the courts. (-25% maintenance cost for this star system) 3. The duty of these telepaths is to their leader, and will be recruited as spies against the enemy. (+4 :espionage: for this system's Intelligence Centers?)

Continued below...

*Might actually be someone else's idea that I borrowed and want to implement :D

Well, the reason I didn't post any ideas was because I'm not really all that fond of the Final Frontier mod, in the first place. I got excited by the screenshots, but the scenario itself seems a bit... incomplete. Like a proof-of-concept.

Regardless, you've got some good ideas, RG. If you implement this, I'll try it out, but I'm more likely to spend my time modding the epic game, rather than FF.

...Continued from above

IV. (Event can only affect a system without a Star Fortress) "A star relatively near this solar system will be going supernova within the year. It is close enough that the shockwave could do some damage if nothing is done." 1. Prepare the system for the coming storm. (-150ish :gold:) 2. Prepare the system and bring in scientists to study this close-up astronomical event. (-250ish :gold:, extra :science:s in the system) 3. Prepare the system and support religious propoganda that claims the supernova is a fulfillment of an oracular prophecy. (-250ish :gold:, +2 happiness in the system)
V. (I need a new spaceship for this event) "Reports reach your star systems of a strange and terrible craft that is destroying starships near the system of X. We must destroy it!" (Spawns new "alienish" spaceship near star system X, allows destroyer of this threat some rewards; gold, research, promotions, etc.?)
VI. "In the star system of X, an ancient computer has been discovered in the ruins of an advanced, abandoned underground city. On this computer are the blueprints for some incredible spaceships!" 1. Great, let's use this advantage by building some of these alien machines! (Grants you a hidden technology that allows you to build the Space Fighters created by Turbo Squid and uploaded by Rabbit White)
VII. "A group of aliens/space pirates has abducted some of your citizens and are demanding ransom! What should we do?" 1. We must pay them; our people are the most important resource we have! (-300ish :gold:) 2. This administration does not negotiate with terrorists; we will, however, fund a military effort to get them back! (-400ish :gold:, +2 experience in this star system?) 3. We cannot afford to do anything about this! (-1 happiness, -1 population in this star system)

Quests!!!
There could be some REALLY fun ones here, as well! The last three up there could easily become Quests, by the way. And of course, some BtS events can be edited and put in (Great Forge, Horse Whispering, Holy Mountain, etc.), but again, let's cook up some new ones!
I. "An enormous asteroid narrowly missed one of your planets. Your citizens are worried, and demand protection from these world-killers! ^Armageddon ;) ^: You are tasked to build 7 Star Fortresses in your cities before researching Doomsday Weapons. You will fail in this quest if you do not meet the requirements before researching Doomsday Weapons. Rewards: 1. Each Star Fortress brings +1 happiness 2. Each Star Fortress brings an extra -10% Damage to Defenses from Bombardment (which makes a total of -25%!) 3. Not sure yet. Other ideas?

Well, my brain is tired for today. Hope these spark some interest and some ideas! :)

Those sound like cool events. I'll probably implement those for my Star Trek mod, and it would be cool for Final Frontier itself to have them.

Thanks deanej! I'm glad you like them. I was thinking about some of the Star Trek episodes when I came up with some of those events, so I'm looking forward to your Star Trek mod! By the way, got any units I could use as my "alienish" spaceship for "Other Events" V? :)

:assimilate: Resistance if futile!

Is there really not very much interest in an event pack for the Final Frontier mod? :( I'm going to make it anyway (for myself :) ), but if the community isn't interested, I suppose that saves me the trouble of uploading it. If anyone would like events for Final Frontier, please post some ideas, or at the very least let me know that you're looking forward to this! :)

Any other ideas? I've been thinking about things like a Rogue AI, a Robot Rebellion, Navigation Systems Failing, and some others. Any creative ways to implement AI Attitude modifying events (think the "Wedding" events from the Epic Game, but something more futuristic...not that they wouldn't have weddings then...lol) would be great, too! :)

Perhaps some events dealing with the Astral Gate? As it stands, it does nothing other than grant victory and nothing in the civlopedia says what the results of its construction are. Also, another cool event could be actually discovering in-game what happened to Earth (would have to be late in the tech tree, though).

 I guess it's just you and me, then, deanej. :) Luckily for me you've got some good ideas. I like where you're going with the Astral Gate event, but I have no idea what it would be...I DO however have a GREAT idea for an Iconian Gateway event (you get an "airport" in one city!). :)

Discovering what happened to Earth you say...well, that's a good idea, and I've seen a lot of FF fans on here wanting to know what happens, and I just happen to have the story's end (from the hand of Jon Shafer himself!), so that should work! Thanks for the good ideas, as always, deanej!

P.S. How's the Star Trek mod coming? I'm really looking forward to it, and you're welcome to any of my events that you think would fit!

Anyway, any other ideas, mod community?

Final Frontier as a mod has a lot of potential. This is due to the fact that it like said by others, seems "incomplete". I've never actually finished a game of FF, because honestly it gets kind of boring:
ex. YOU HAVE DISCOVERED SOMETHING SPACE-RELATED!...YOU GET A NEW SHIP!
YOU HAVE DISCOVERED ANOTHER THING SPACE-RELATED!...YOU GET ANOTHER NEW SHIP!

So much could be done to the tech tree, as right now it is way too military-oriented. Speaking of events, I think you shouldn't just be allowed to conquer entire systems all the time. I think sometimes things should go wrong and your colony ship is destroyed:
A large group of alien beings have attacked your colony ship! (Colony ship is destroyed)
Also another cool random event would be if one or more of your ships suddenly had a mutiny and you lost control of them (annoying for you and the enemy, as they would become like barbarians).

Yeah, I agree that Final Frontier has a lot of potential; that's why I'm doing what I can to flesh out some of that potential. The most glaringly obvious thing that I can "fix" about it is the lack of events, so that's what I'm working on now. Once that's done, I'll tackle adding some techs to the tree and I'm going to add several buildings, however at the moment I have no idea how that's done (I do seem to remember seeing a tutorial on those, though). It just makes it hard to get very far because I can't (for whatever reason) seem to get any answers to my modding questions, possibly because no one cares about a Final Frontier mod. Then again, I realize that this is a discussion board, not a "we're all here to answer renegadechicken's questions" forum, but hopefully someone will help me and I can make some more headway. :)

Thanks for your ideas, by the way! I like the idea of the colony ship being destroyed, and I hadn't thought of that. I do have an event that wipes out a newly built colony (see previous posts), and even some that can destroy your starships as well. Currently I have 43 new events that I've made up (though not without the ideas from people here on the boards!) and 12 that I've modified from the Epic Game for Final Frontier. These include things like the events in the (long) posts above, and others (such as Navigation System Failure, Engine Failure, Rogue AI, Robot Rebellion, Nature Returns, Future Visitor, Blame Game, etc.). I'm also currently working on a way to create the other event you described (a ship mutiny), but since I have NO Python skills and my questions are left unanswered (I must sound bitter about that...I'm really not!), I don't know how to replace a unit with the same unit class but as a barbarian.

Keep the ideas coming! :)

I'm looking forward to this, Rc, so I guess that's one more :) Final Frontier is my favorite mod, and it could really use some events, so I'm glad someone is working on it.

How about an event like the "Bermuda Triangle", except in space?

First off, welcome to the forums, Old_Philosopher!

Secondly, thanks for the support. I'm glad there are a few people looking forward to these events. It makes it a lot easier to keep going. :)

And as for your idea, I like it! I'm not exactly sure what I'd call it (Bermuda Triangle wouldn't really work), but that's a great idea! :goodjob: Thanks!

Why, thank you for the welcome! I've been a lurker on these forums for a while now, but just joined today. And don't get discouraged! I know it may be hard when noone seems interested, but there could be a lot of lurkers like me who couldn't post, and they're hoping you'll finish just as I am. I've read a lot of discussion on these boards about how FF is unfinished and incomplete, and you're one of the few I've seem interested in doing something about it instead of just complaining. Judging by all the posts wanting more from FF, I'm sure you'll get a lot of downloads when you finish your events. Keep pluggin' away! :)

How about a omega-level ship is sent back in time via a freak time warp?

In other games, you might get Omega level ships from the future... perhaps that's where they went?

Or maybe there should be an Orion Planet... I haven't played Master of Orion much, but it sounds like a cool planet
