Ive recently gotten into 'British' mystery novels, particularly Elizabeth George (excellent) and Martha Grimes (occasionally ok), only to discover that theyre Americans. Can you recommend some good British writers of British mysteries?

Conan Doyle is the obvious choice, I find Sherlock Holmes fantastic.

You could also go the Agatha Cristie ( I never did) way with Miss MArple and the guy (the Belgian one-can't remember).

Ive read all the Sherlock Holmes stories, havent tried Agatha Cristie yet though, I'll get to her eventually. Im more interested in the current crop of writers.

You mean Poirot?

Ok I'll put Poirot on my list. Ive seen the BBC tv shows based on the character but didnt get into it too much because I couldnt stand the guy playing Poirot. Of course the original books are a whole other ball game. Unfortunately reading the original Inspector Lynley books by Elizabeth George have ruined the BBC program for me, I used to love it. Theyre super condensed, dumbed down versions of the books. I shout at the screen "No, thats all wrong!"

Reminds me of Inspector Morse, another of my favorites on TV (Im still mourning his death:cry: ). Anyone read the books? Im assuming they were originally novels, but a quick google only produced videos.

You might want to check out Christopher Brookmeyer and Ian Rankin. They are both relatively new. However, they are both a bit on the gory and frenetic side.

I refined the search a little: Colin Dexter writes the Morse novels.

@sam, ok I'll google them right now.

Rankins Inspector Rebus sounds very interesting, I'll definitely check him out. Couldnt dig up anything on Brookmeyer though. Maybe thats not the correct spelling?

I'll check and post a link. Rankin is the better of the two IMO anyway. Link

Reginald Hill - Dalziel and Pascoe
Ian Rankin - Rebus
Colin Dexter - Morse

All are top class - and a lot better than they would appear from watching the Tv shows.

Reginald Hill sounds excellent too. Im checking these out at Amazon, much better than google. I knew you guys would be a goldmine of information. I feel like running out to Barnes and Noble right now!

Another one for you - Ronald Wingfield - creater of Frost.

Cant believe I never heard of Frost!
Detective Inspector Jack Frost, Denton Division, is not beloved by his superiors. In fact, he's something of a pain in the brass: unkempt and unruly, with a taste for crude humor and a tendency to cut corners.
Sounds like my kind of guy!

On TV he's played by David "Del Boy" Jason.
When I looked it up, it said he's on A&E here in America, which probably explains why I never heard of him, I never watch that channel.

Ive heard of the "A is for, B is for" series, but I automatically discounted it because it sounds so gimicky. Have you read any of them? If you could recomend a good one I'll pick it up when I go foraging (probably tommorow).
