Broken Check For Updates Feature in the Options Menu

This feature worked before I downloaded the first patch from Firaxis, but now it just sits there and does nothing when the button is pushed. It won't even allow me use control-alt-delete to get out of the program. Has this happened to anyone else? What can I do to fix this problem? I'd like to download the latest patch as soon as possible, but this issue is in the way.

I have the same problem. When I hit the update button it just kind of freezes, the music continues and I can move the cursor, but that's it. I can't alt-tab, alt-f4, or ctrl-alt-del out either, when I do try that the computer DOES complet the command, but the Civ4 engine stays up and you can't see desktop.

At first I thought it was just my firewall holding things up asking for permissions, but even with my firewall off it does the same thing. I had to download the patch off of some REALLY NICE GUY that hosted it on his own webspace and bandwith in the general forums on this site.
