It is not pirated. He should have checked the actual file which links to the distributors own site. The party that posted it on download.com was Daz3d themselves. Their is considerable discussion about this on the daz3d forums. download.com is not some small time pirate web site, but part of a very large media company etc, etc...

Also, if you've been on here long enough to remember back a year or more, I have several times complained when others have posted pirated stuff on here. I have also mentioned more than once that I'd work in software development for a great many years.

Version 5.5 (not 5.0) is still for sale. Version 6.0 will be released later this year with supposedly a "good" discount for version 5.5 owners. Want more info, go to Daz3d.com.

You should've seen the things we did to Bjornlo (myself included, but I read it further and took off the ban), but since it was posted by the company, we'll leave it at that and let this thread get back on topic.

Maybe plotinus was just amazed that daz3d would actually offer bryce for free. Anyways...lets get back on topic...how do i aquire a serial #?

Start the application.
alt+tab to the background.
There will be a website open. This is the Daz3d web site.
Follow their prompts and you get your serial number.

oh, so i have to have internet enabled then, im loading on my labtop, it doesnt have internet, oh my!

either start the install on another PC and get the serial number, or write down the website address from your laptop (during that install) then go to that site via your mail machine and get the serial number that way.
But, you won't get much of the goodies without a internet connection. There is a follow up add-on pack, which I guess you could also get using the methods I just described.

How much ram do you have on your laptop? Does it have a fast CPU? Because unless your laptop is rather beefy, it is not the ideal tool to make 3d stuff on... the render times might be painful if the laptop is also swapping.
Also since 90% of the content (initially) is likely to be downloaded, starting bryce in a PC without a internet connection will involve alot of hassle. You will have to DL the stuff to your internet PC, make a copy of it on a CD or something and then copy it off the CD on to your laptop.
The other option is to also install a modeler and make everything yourself. Certainly doable, but even then it'd be nice to have a net connection for textures, or what have you..

ok, i got the program on my internet pc, but it took my to this website:
Moderator Action: Link removed.
it said the page could not be displayed.

oh, and my laptob is pretty strong, it can handle poser and openfx without a problem, so i think bryce will be fine

your serial number is in a PM. I just followed that link you posted. You should probably delete that link in your post.
I suspect, but do not know, that the number in it is unique to you. I don't know why they are handing out serial numbers in this manner, but they are.
For Bryce 5.5 they don't use serial numbers.

um, i just checked, and i dont have any PMs.

Does anyone have an answer to this:
Can I import stuff from bryce to pov-ray (Currently I'm under the impression, that the answer is something like "very possibly no" )?

I sent it as "pm via e-mail" instead. I figured you might get it sooner.

i got it, but for some reason it does not work, i copied the whole thing and pasted it in teh box. Ive tried something esle too, ive downloaded and installed the program from daz3d themselves, i think i can bypass the serial code that way, ill see asfter i reboot my comp, then ill post teh results.

@aaglo: im not sure you can, bryce deels with visual graphics while POV-Ray deals with code, both 2 completely different types, unless of course POV-Ray can extract code from graphics

Yes, I got temporarily confused about it all.

[Polyphemus] Everything in a computer is ultimately code, so I suppose that in theory there's no reason why Bryce objects shouldn't be convertible to POVray ones - but I bet it's not possible.

Be aware that, according to Daz, this free download offer is only open until 06/09/06! So it's worth downloading it now even if you might not want to use it for a while.

What's the difference between Bryce 5 and 5.5? I use Bryce 5.5. :)

With version 5.0, the only items which are easy to export are things like ground, rocks, and such.
There are those who use crazy detailed images to create 3d objects (meshes) with the ground, but this is not the norm.

Bryce can also export anything it imported. So, if POVRAY can import OBJ but not 3ds (just an example), then you can load a 3ds into Bryce and export it as OBJ (or LWS/LWO, COB, etc).
Version 6.0 is supposed to have better export capabilities but won't be released for a month or more.

I know someone else who dl'ed it and installed it with no problems. If you continue to have problems, maybe ask on the daz3d forums?
And POVRAY and Bryce both work with the same sort of data, they just display it differently. A 3d object is always just a series of numbers, Bryce is just visual in how it displays it and how objects are manipulated while POVRAY is more text based... like dos vs. windows.
Both did the same stuff (initially), but some prefer typing while others prefer clicking and dragging.

5.5 is faster at rendering
has better integration with daz studio (the free poser compatible program)
has much better OpenGL display modes
Also, it multitasks better. 5.0 locks the taskbar so you don't see what is happening in the background, and have to ALT+TAB to go there.
There are other changes (more materials, sky settings, etc...) I just don't remember them all.
The bottom line is that they are quite similar. And 5.0 and 5.5 use the exact same data format... so 5.0 and 5.5 files are interchangeable. Find a cool 5.0 scene on the internet? No problem to load it in 5.5. Fina a cool 5.5 file, and you can load it in 5.0.
